First Day

It’s the first day of school! Yay! The day is finally here. For the first time since March 2020, I had the house to myself during the day! Oh and naturally, the kids went back to their physical school for the first time in 18 months. In fact, today was the first time the Mayor set foot on his high school campus as a student.

Needless to say, I’m thrilled their back to in person instruction. It was awesome working the whole day with no interruptions or distractions. I was happy as a honeybee working uninterrupted for the first time in 18 months. The puppies sat quietly in my room most of the day. Thankfully, the peacefulness of the house translated into a very successful day on the phones. Truly, today was the polar opposite of yesterday from a sales perspective.

Of course today brought with it some emotion as we sent Goalielocks off to his last first day of school. I can’t believe how fast time has flown by. It seems like just yesterday he was heading to kindergarten. You’ll notice in the first day pictures that some things never change. Who knows if he’ll ever cooperate when I want to take his picture.

Here’s a list of our day’s activities:

*I’m reading the Raider Bride. This is the third book thing the Norse Queen series. I love the world of Queen Asa.

*I’m still under the weather. Consequently, I took another rest day today.  Unfortunately, there will be no rollicking or running until I’m better.

*I ran to Dunkin’ to get my own coffee this morning. Just kidding, I had it delivered again. 

*For dinner, the I made myself chicken noodle soup, which is good for the soup and a cold.

*My favorite surprise on the underwater cams, I watch during work, is seeing an octopus. Today I watched the safari cam, which never disappoints.

*Today’s word of the day is grizzle. Yesterday afternoon there was a raccoon with a grizzled face in our avocado tree and it was quite the vision. 

*I took my puppies including sweet Anakin for a walk. Today he didn’t pull my arm off or anything like that. I put on his harness

School Eve

It’s school eve and I couldn’t be more excited. For the first time since March 2020, our boys will be attending school in person. In fact, tomorrow will be the first time the Mayor sets foot in his high school despite being a sophomore. He’s in good company as everyone else, but the senior class, has barely set foot in the school.


We celebrated the end of summer with wings and pizza. Post dinner, the Mayor and hubby ran out to get haircuts and some school supplies. As for me, I’m chilling on the couch watching The Office. My summer cold is still hanging on, which sucks. Today brought major back pain to go along with all the misery that is a summer cold. Since it’s school eve, aka the night before school, we’ll all be getting to bed a little earlier.

*Tonight I worked on a newsletter for our Pancan affiliate. Sometimes working in Canva makes me feel like a schmo, but it’s such a great tool. I definitely need to spend some more time playing around with it. 

*For dinner, the I ordered pizza and wings from Sal’s.

First Day of School 2020

I’m ecstatic to report that the first day of school 2020 went fantabulously well! That’s right; today exceeded my expectations in every way. The beginning of the day got off to a great start. The Mayor was at his desk ready to work when I woke up. My biggest fear for today was trying to wake up Goalielocks, but he was out of bed and ready to go very quickly. I almost fell over due to this pleasant surprise. Naturally, I was completely relieved.

Of course, getting up early sucks for me too. I’ve been keeping summer hours since March. So up until this week, I’ve been sleeping in until 7:30-7:45. Now I’m up before 7:00 am to make sure my two star pupils are ready for the first bell at 7:30 am. Thankfully, I went to bed early last night to help me adjust to an earlier wake-up. One of my goals is to ensure I get over seven hours of sleep every night. Fortunately, the earlier start to my morning meant less of a wait at my Dunkin’.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the day was that both boys were in a good mood. I think being back in school brings back structure and socialization that they’ve missed. While they’re attending school virtually, there is still ample opportunity for socialization in their classes. Meanwhile, I was able to go about my day without interruption. I won today!

Lastly, I bring you an urgent prayer request. These past six months have been difficult for everyone, but life has a way of reminding you that you’re fortunate. Deb was one of the first people we met when we first started hockey over a decade ago. She was a mainstay at the rink. I’m not sure she ever left. Her daughter Lia was actually on Goalielocks’ first rec hockey team. They were the Lightning and they won the championship. Lia is a figure skater but wanted to try playing hockey like her brothers.

A few years later, Deb’s son sustained a head injury during a junior game. Unfortunately, the doctors discovered that he had a malignant tumor. We were all devastated by the news. The hockey community was devastated. Thankfully, he underwent treatment that eradicated the disease. Sadly, the disease came back within the last year. After consultation with several doctors earlier this month, the doctors determined they had done everything they could. Consequently, doctors have placed her son Austin into hospice care. Please pray for Austin’s healing and peace, for Deb, their family, and friends as they navigate this difficult time.

*Gentle Flow with Jennifer at Open Heart Yoga Studio

*I ran one mile and walked a mile today. Naturally, I listened to Metallica and watched Curb throughout my run.

*I had another pile of Amazon boxes waiting for me today.

*The Mayor has hockey a two hour hockey practice tonight.

*BBG 2.0. week 12 day 1: legs, cardio and yoga

*Today is the first day of school 2020. Since it’s virtual, I didn’t need to go out an buy the 2020 version of the Members Only jacket.

*I took my puppies including sweet Anakin for a walk.

Grasp

You ever tell your kids something, but feel like they just don’t grasp what you’re saying no matter how many times you say it? I feel like I’m talking to myself sometimes as they stare blankly back at me.

Tonight the struggle was over grades with the Mayor telling me 6th grade is hard. Well that very well maybe the case, his grade isn’t poor because he’s struggling with the material. His grade is poor because he’s not completing the homework. Unquestionably, it’s beyond frustrating when a kid’s grade falls because of a lack of effort, focus, prioritization and honesty.

I think sometimes they forget that we can see their grades as often as their teachers update them. We had a conversation about Newsela last night. My hubby and I were explicitly told that Newsela wasn’t part of his coursework. Guess what, according to Edline tonight, it is a pretty sizable part of his grade. Unfortunately, he didn’t do it regularly throughout the quarter and is now paying for it dearly.

Clearly, it was one of those nights that needed to be spent in the yoga silk with peace and serenity and no Bravo Sierra. In the meantime, the WiFi to the Xbox and Roku has been cutoff for them. Pending their final grades on Friday, both boys maybe headed to the dreaded “flip phone zone.” No more iPhone for them!
