Spoke Too Soon

Yesterday the universe was no my side, but I spoke toon soon. My day started with the Dunkin’ app refusing to work in any capacity. This may seem silly, but delaying my first coffee of the day is a dangerous proposition for everyone. After fidgeting with the app in the car for a few minutes, I gave up and went into the store. Thankfully, the delay in securing my coffee soon ended. As I joyously sipped my coffee, I was amazed at how technology makes our life so much easier. Yet it wreaks havoc on your day when it doesn’t work correctly. The important part of this story is that I got my coffee and it was delicious.

It just wasn’t our day from a technology perspective. The boys got bounced from class multiple times due to wi-fi issues. As I worked away today, the lapses in wi-fi caused multiple delays and untold frustration. Even as I was about to start my run, the wi-fi cut out. How am I supposed to run two miles without my music and Larry David? That’s not a humane proposition. I stretched out my warm-up to get the wi-fi working and my Curb Your Enthusiasm playing before embarking on the two-mile treadmill run.

Meanwhile, as I toiled away at the computer, Anakin ate away at my Italian sandal. If ever there was a visual representation of my day or 2020 in general, it would be my chewed shoe. To be fair, if the cobbler couldn’t fix the shoes, I was going to toss them. Nonetheless, I experienced a little heartbreak as I picked up the sandal. Anakin, meanwhile, is so sweet and cute that it is hard to be angry with him. As I looked at him angrily, he looked up at me with the most loving look. How could I be mad?

This evening we were quite busy. Zachary had off ice with his team at 6:15 am. While I had my Purple Stride planning meeting from 6:00-7:00 pm. Consequently, we ended up eating a lot later than usual. For dinner, we cooked up paprika chicken, green beans and biscuits. This was a HelloFresh meal and it was pretty good. The chicken was a bit bland, but we only used half of the paprika. The biscuits, however, were absolute fire. Now we’re winding down by watching NHL playoffs and relaxing on the couch with our puppies.

Reality Bites

Reality bites isn’t just the name of a great 90s video, it’s also the universe’s way of balancing our existence. Naturally, I had high hopes for Tuesday after such a great Monday. However, reality kicked back it and reality bites. It started off innocuously enough with Goalielocks assuring me he was awake and attending class. Meanwhile, the Mayor was ready to go well in advance of the first bell.

My day was a bit stressful because I had to take the health insurance licensing exam this evening. Consequently, I dedicated the vast majority of my day to balancing work and studying. In fact, I only left my office for lunch and coffee. While I toiled away in my room, the boys were busy attending school.

I asked the Mayor to do the dishes on lunch break since Goalielocks has been down for the count with a back injury. You can imagine my dismay when I open the running dishwasher to find it half full. You can contrast that with the view off full sink and countertop. Needless to say, I was not impressed. Fortunately for him, I was consumed with trying to work and study, so he got off easy.

Tonight I passed the exam in about 25 minutes. I’ve crammed the last few weeks for the test. I knew, despite my nerves, that I was well prepared. It was also a good preview of what the real estate exam will will be like. Obviously, as soon as I passed a weight was lifted from my shoulders. All my hard work paid off. Afterward, I had a nice dinner cooked by my hubby.

Lastly, I worked through some stretching with Goalielocks, who has had severe lower back pain the last two days. Hopefully, the stretching we did will alleviate his pain. Now we’re watching hockey waiting to see if Tampa Bay will seal the deal tonight. Oh and in case you were wondering, Goalielocks didn’t make it to first period.

Two Day Streak

I don’t mean to brag, but I have a two day streak of getting dressed in real clothes. This is probably the first time since the pandemic started that I’ve worn non-workout clothes on two consecutive days. Last night we went to dinner, so I dressed up. And then today we went to a friend’s house for dinner, so I got dressed up. Don’t fear, however, as I plan to go back to my covid uniform of yoga pants and workout tanks.

Since we we had dinner plans followed by hockey practice, I had to make my morning super productive. First, I had to study insurance for a forthcoming exam. Next I had to complete my BBG ab workout for the week. Finally, I had to log my mile run. Thankfully, all three went superbly. Albeit, I have to say I hate raise leg sit-ups. They’re the absolute worst. Also, I’m still not a fan of half burpees. Nonetheless, I slayed the workout and look forward to my abs being sore tomorrow.

We had dinner at our friends house, so the Mayor could see his injured teammate. AG broke his wrist in the tournament last week. Unfortunately, he’ll be having surgery to correct the break on Wednesday. Please say a prayer that his surgery goes well and recovery is quick. All weekend, my boy has been harassing me asking when we’d be going to his house. I mean non-stop from morning til night.

When we finally headed to their house, the Mayor was quite happy. We had a blast hanging out with them. It’s been far too long since we’ve been on the same hockey team or hung out. If tonight was any indication, we’ll have an incredibly fun season. The food was also delicious. I don’t think I’ll need to eat until tomorrow evening.

Afterward we headed to the rink for practice. Originally, we had hope to setup a scrimmage this weekend, but no teams were available. Fortunately, we were able to run an extra practice with the ice team, which is probably more important than a scrimmage at this point. The squad worked hard and the coaches wore them out. As for the rest of the night, we’re just chilling on the couch watching Family Guy.

Hard Earned Wine

I enjoyed my hard-earned wine, I mean win this evening. First of all, I survived (barely) the first week of virtual school. Secondly, I survived driving on I-4 on Labor Day weekend. To be honest, I’m not sure which is worse I-4 during rush hour or managing virtual school for teenagers. Its time like these that I appreciate how easy going my oldest was throughout his school days. It’s also a reminder of what my younger brother and I put my parents through when we were teenagers.

Fortunately, today’s adventure in schooling was much easier and happier than yesterday. Both boys were up and ready for their classes at 7:30 am. Unlike yesterday, Goalielocks was in a good mood all day. This makes my life exponentially easier. Meanwhile, I was able to accomplish a lot this morning because I was fighting either of them. For starters, I finished my last ab workout of BBG 2.0. Afterward, I ran a mile and walked a mile on the treadmill. I’m enjoying the challenge to run at least a mile every day.

Since this is Labor Day weekend, I had to get packed up and ready to head to Tampa for a hockey tournament. This year it will be like no other due to COVID. There will be limits on spectators, including no siblings, and no congregating. Hopefully, this tournament is a success, meaning no COVID outbreaks follow it. If it is successful, we’ll be able to have more tournaments throughout the state this season.

As for tonight, I’ll be watching playoff hockey before drifting off into dreamland. My Graves is still raging, so I’m running quite hot. Fortunately, this weekend I can keep the thermostat was low as I want without worrying about the bed. It’s a bit odd, but both my father and I still run hot even after our thyroids have been zapped. Nonetheless, I’ll be in an ice rink all weekend, which will keep me comfortable. I’ll be posting updates on the games tomorrow.

Day Four

Day four of virtual school was one for the history books. Particularly, if your history books focus on dumpster fires or shit shows. If so, this day was legendary. We all knew it was coming, didn’t we? I mean, I think we’ve been waiting for the shoe to drop. And today that mo-fo of a shoe dropped. This means the low expectations I wrote about yesterday came to fruition today.

First of all, my thyroid is raging. I’ve been so hot at night I can only manage with one light blanket and the thermostat at 72 degrees. My doctor will be adjusting my dosage down a bit come next Tuesday morning. It also means that falling asleep and staying asleep has been a real challenge. For some reason, I don’t fall into a good deep sleep until early in the morning. Anyway, I remembered to get up to take my thyroid meds, but I slept through my alarm to wake up the boys. Fortunately, this wasn’t an issue for my Mayor, who was ready to go to school by 7:00 am.

On the other hand, this was a problem for Goalielocks. As soon as I woke up, which was still before school started, I ran upstairs to make sure he was awake and ready to attend class. He sat up in his bed, grumbled, and laid back down. I proceeded to repeat my message; i.e. get out of bed and get ready for class. This time he sat up. He told me he knew he had to be up and asked me to close the door so he could get dressed. I shut the door, albeit it not tightly. He then yelled at me for not being able to close the door right. Teenagers are so pleasant in the morning. Aren’t they?

Thinking he was up, I headed out to grab my coffee. As you may know, Dunkin’ coffee is essential to my ability to function as a human being. Afterward, I took the dogs out and went to work. It was a long commute to work from my couch to my room, but I made it safely and without incident. I got some work done before going to yoga via Zoom. It was at that point I realized I hadn’t heard my middle child moving around upstairs. Before relaxing into child’s pose, I texted him and added a find my iPhone alert. He responded pretty quickly asking why nobody had woken him up for school. Seriously?

Obviously, he made me mad. Since he was now up and attending class, I continued with my yoga class. I was hoping that the beautiful yin class taught by Jennifer would help calm me. Fortunately, I finished the class feeling like a new person and completely calm. At least for a few minutes. Naturally, the calm left me after interacting with my two star pupils, who were in stellar moods today. How lucky am I that both were in a piss poor mood? At dinner, Goalielocks was still insisting nobody walked him up. This despite the fact I had a full conversation with him this morning at 7:15. Anyway, today was the type of day I have dreaded. Thankfully, we only have one day left in the week.

*I survived day 3 of virtual school. I am keeping my eye on the prize aka the weekend.

*We had no hockey practice tonight. It was family dinner night. I cooked pork carnitas tacos, which were awesome.

*BBG 2.0. week 12 day 4: cardio and yoga

Day 2

Day 2 of virtual school brought a little of the attitude I had anticipated yesterday. I never imagined that waking up a teenager, who just went to bed, could be so much fun! In the end, it turned out okay. Both boys were up, at their desks, and online exactly when they were supposed to be online. That’s right I’m batting 1.00 right now.

As for me, I had yoga teacher training today. We covered the endocrine system, which is probably my strongest subject in anatomy and physiology. After all, there’s no better way to understand the endocrine system than having one that doesn’t work. We have little bit of anatomy left before we head into methodology. I’m excited for the methodology part of training, which we will start on Friday.

I also ran two miles since I had no strength training scheduled today. Since I started the running challenge, I’ve noticed it’s gotten a lot easier. However, I also noticed that my legs are getting a bit tired. Of course, I worked my legs yesterday, so that doesn’t help either.

Tonight my hubby made us a wonderful pork chop dinner courtesy of HelloFresh. It was mighty tasty especially since I didn’t make. I really appreciated that he cooked dinner, so I didn’t have to cut my workout short. Afterward, I mixed up some brownies for the boys since the last two days have been relatively smooth.

The Bell Jar

I recently finished reading Slyvia Plath’s The Bell Jar. Admittedly, I was not super familiar with Plath or her writings before I read her book. Yes, I had heard of her and her untimely death, but beyond that, I knew nothing. In fact, I didn’t even know what to expect when I started reading the book. Well, at least until my dear friend Terri asked if I was emotionally stable. Whelp! I was totally stable, but starting to question my decision to read this book during the bleakness of a global pandemic. My morbid curiosity got the best of me, so I read the book. Alas, the scene in Family Guy between Lois and Meg finally made sense to me.

Despite the gravity of the book’s storyline, I decided it was important to read it. Plath is a terrific writer, who I was starting to enjoy. However, there was something off about the heroine from page one. Her internal dialogue was not something I could relate to. For example, I didn’t understand why she referred to people in their lives by their full names. Instead of saying my boyfriend at Yale, she would write Buddy Willard. I’m not sure why, but it just struck me as odd. I found myself unable to relate to Esther and her apathy towards her amazing internship in New York.

At one point, just like when I read Nabokov’s Lolita, it was uncomfortable to read. Perhaps because I know the ending of the author’s story or the honest and unbridled look at a person’s downward spiral was unnerving. Also, I felt like I was intruding on a deeply personal struggle. As Esther, aka Sylvia, devolved into her depressive state it got harder and harder to take. I struggled to relate to her struggles. Perhaps this is because the majority of downward spirals I’ve witnessed have taken a narcissistic bent on social media.

There was, however, one theme that I felt we could all relate to during this pandemic. Plath writes several times how Esther feels trapped under the bell jar with no air and no escape. For those stuck in the bell jar, the word itself is a bad dream. To me, 2020 kind of seems like a global bell jar. I say this, by no means, to minimize Esther’s/Slyvia’s struggle with mental illness. I say it because we all have felt like we’re trapped without a way out of the 2020 “bell jar.”

Eventually, Esther receives the treatment she needs and is able to resume her life at college. For us, eventually, the pandemic will abate and the bell jar will be lifted. In the interim, it’s important to find ways to lift the jar and give ourselves room to breathe. Here are a couple of ways you can do that:

*Get outside – walk, run, hike, bike, swim. The great outdoors are cathartic as is exercise.

*Adopt or foster a pet

*Exercise – Youtube has plenty of free workouts If your gym is currently closed.

*Find a community to connect with. It doesn’t matter if you’re meeting up in person or on Zoom. Connect with people.

*Check-in on family members and friends. Particularly, check-in on the elderly, who haven’t been allowed visitors due to the pandemic. Imagine how lonely they must be and how grateful they would be to hear your voice.

*Start something new. I will be starting a book club this week as it is a great way to connect with people. If you’re interested in joining, let me know.

*Watch playoff hockey- the games have been incredible and there is no better sport in the world.

Left on the Mountain

Yep, you read that right I was left on the mountain. It all happened at the Farmington Creek Trail just south of Layton. I picked this trail for our Thursday hike because it features: a car cemetery, two waterfalls (including the one you could rappel down to), and a moderate degree of difficulty. Admittedly, I am not fast on my ascent up the trails. Due to the Graves disease, I’m mindful of my maintaining my heart rate and regulating my body temperature. This, of course, is not always easy when hiking. Consequently, my ascent was slow, measured, and littered with water breaks.

On the flip side, the hike for my boys was quite easy. Goalielocks soon pulled away from both the Mayor and me as he ran up the trail. I was jealous at the ease with which he tackled the mountain. In protest, the Mayor sped ahead on his own. Fortunately, when the Mayor got to the first waterfall, he waited for me. On the other hand, I couldn’t find Goalielocks. The challenge became the fork in the trail. Unfortunately, the park service hadn’t clearly marked the trail. Fortuantely, we were able to ask local hikes which way to go. Meanwhile, we had no idea which way Goalielocks had gone at the fork.

I decided to follow the trail to the second waterfall hoping we’d find Goalielocks on the trail. Undeniably, I was nervous that nobody had seen him. At this point, we were so deep into the canyon that we didn’t have cell service. As we continued the trail, the Mayor again took off down the path. Meanwhile, I vacillated between anger, frustration, and awe. As I rounded the bend, I saw a vintage car overtaken by the forest with bullet holes all over. It was quite picturesque. At this point, the Mayor came back to me expressed his discontent with the hike, and headed back to the car.

Now they really annoyed me. Yet, I was determined to see the waterfall. I continued down the path looking for the ropes that would take me down to the base of the waterfall. As I searched the area, I finally got a call from Goalielocks who was at the car waiting. Eventually, I found the ropes that could take me down to the waterfall. However, with unreliable cellphone service and nobody near me, I wasn’t willing to risk a fall or injury by rappelling down to the waterfall. Consequently, I started making my way back to the car where both boys were impatiently waiting for me.

Since I knew they were safe at the car, I was in no hurry to finish my hike. The canyon and trail provided beautiful vista after beautiful vista that I wanted to take it all in. Also, the ascent wore me out as it was a vigorous hike. When I made it back to the first waterfall, I took a seat on a large boulder near the side of the stream and relaxed for a bit. In this spot, the mountain stream and shade cooled the air. It was a magical spot to rest and recover before tackling the sunny part of the descent to the car.

While I was sitting at the waterfall, the Mayor made his way back up the trail in search of water. I had brought my backpack, filled with water bottles and oranges to keep us nourished throughout and after the hike. However, since I was the only one willing to carry it, all of the supplies were with me. Consequently, when he got thirsty he had no choice, but to seek me out. Naturally, he received quite a tongue lashing from me once we met again on the mountain. Soon after we met up with Goalielocks, who had come up the trail looking for me out of concern it was taking too long. Of course, I had been almost four miles deep into the trail, so it wasn’t going to be a quick return.

Goalielocks took a left at the first waterfall, which took him on a significantly shorter trail. Eventually, both of the trails meet up near the second waterfall. However, his trail was overgrown as it approached the waterfall trail. Goalielocks headed back the way he came since he wasn’t sure where the trail led. The hillside where he hiked was filled with vintage cars, known as the car cemetery. On our descent, I learned that he had told his brother where he was going. Unfortunately, the Mayor neglected to tell me this. I was super annoyed with the Mayor at this point. I want to rappel down to the waterfall and I couldn’t because I was alone. Naturally, we spoke at length, on our way back to the Airbnb, about the importance of staying together during hikes.

Despite all the drama on the mountain, this was definitely one of my favorite hikes. The trail affords incredible views of the Great Salt Lake, the valley, the mountains and the canyon. Everywhere you looked, it was absolutely beautiful. Moreover, it was an incredibly peaceful hike as the trail was not crowded. I look forward to hiking this trail again with Jake and my hubby. Hopefully, we’ll get to see some fall colors on the hike and even have the chance to rappel down to the waterfall.

Eight Days

Eight days until I see my airmen!!!!! The title reminds me of our favorite songs, “Eight Days a Week” by the Beatles. This trip will be our first one after the epidemic started, so I’m pretty excited. Needless to say, we’ll be taking plenty of precautions as we travel. Also, we will spend the bulk of our journey outside in wide-open spaces. Fortunately, there is a multitude of outdoor opportunities to fill our time. I cannot wait to explore the Rockies and its surrounding area with my boys!

Today is also my dad’s sixty-seventh birthday. Unfortunately, this year is the first year the boys haven’t been able to celebrate with him since 2009. Undoubtedly, we will have to celebrate all the missed milestones of 2020 once this pandemic is over. Hopefully, we can do celebrate these during the holidays when my son is home on leave. That would be the best Christmas gift ever! I cannot wait to be able to see my family again.

Before I leave you for the night, I need to ask for prayers for Cole. He’s Goalielocks’ teammate, who was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in February. Unfortunately, he suffered a setback this week and is dealing with a nasty eye infection. The first combination of antibiotics proved problematic causing an allergic reaction and the main antibiotic ultimately failed. He is feeling somewhat better today, but has no immune system to fight infection. Please pray that the new antibiotic regiment will take care of the infection, so he can restart chemo next week. Please pray for his continued strength and for his family.

Does Anyone Know What Day It Is?

Does anyone know what day it is? Like seriously, for a millisecond or maybe more, I was convinced that it was Tuesday. In fact, it almost made its way into the blog as the title. Clearly, there are advantages to working at home and never having to leave. However, it has a Ground Hogs’ Day sort of feeling that leaves you wondering what day it is. Honestly, if it wasn’t for my different yoga classes, I don’t think I’d be able to determine the day of the week truly.

Regardless of my difficulty determining the day of the week, I crushed the day professionally. I had two very productive sales meetings with clients. Moreover, I sent out three presentations for clients to review. Today was awesome! When I initially took the position, one of the main draws with the flexibility of the position. However, I have found, over the course of the last few weeks, that meeting and connecting with interesting and successful people is the best part of the job. In fact, I can see how much I am going to learn in this position through my professional interactions. It’s truly exciting.

As for my fitness goals, I wrote a bit about my shoulder being off last night. Unfortunately, it continues to be a bit unstable and a bit painful. Originally, I planned to do the BBG arm workout today. However, when I saw the exercises, I realized I needed to skip it today. Sadly, I think copious amounts of burpees and other plyometrics are not what my shoulder needs right now. Fortunately, I was able to go to my yoga class and that was fantastic. I modified poses where I needed to for my foot and shoulder, but overall I felt pretty good in class. In truth, I am so grateful that my new job allows me the flexibility to take a yoga break whenever I want.

My yoga studio, Open Heart Yoga Studio, has been a sanctuary for me since I started in late October of 2019. When I first restarted my practice, my entire body was tight. In fact, my shoulders were nearly frozen and were a significant source of pain. I started slowly with the gentle classes at least five times a week. Eventually, I was taking classes six days a week and increasing my intensity. This studio, its owner Jennifer and all her teachers, has been crucial to rebuilding my fitness and healing my body. For those of us with autoimmune disease, yoga is a fantastic way to decrease stress and inflammation.

Unfortunately, the pandemic has not been kind to small businesses and my wonderful yoga studio is no exception. For those of you in the South Florida area, I urge you to give your local studio a try.
