Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas from our family to yours. As I write this, we’re still celebrating with family at my brother’s house. I thought I’d write while we wait for the the steaks to be finished. Lord knows I could use some protein after carb loading this morning. Speaking of morning, I started my day early since I decided to make a double batch of caramel rolls.

Before we opened presents, I started the second batch of caramel rolls. Meanwhile, I set out the first batch to bring the dough back to room temperature. Fortunately, the boys sleep in later on Christmas morning now that they’re older. I even managed to make a quick trip to Dunkin to grab a coffee before we opened presents.

It was awesome having Jake back home to open presents. We definitely missed him last year. Although he was the highlight of last year’s brunch when he called us from BMT to wish us a merry Christmas. I know having him home for the holidays is the equivalent of winning the military lottery, so I’m cherishing our holiday all together. I was definitely filled with jubilation when I heard his leave had been approved.

We had a wonderful brunch with family and friends, who have become friends. In addition to our traditional mimosas, I added a peach Bellini to the drink menu. Additionally, my sister-in-law added some coquito to the mix. Unbelievably, we went through more than 40 rolls, a pan and a half of cholesterol bake, hash browns and countless cookies. Needless to say, we were all in a carb coma after the meal.

Afterwards, we cleaned up the leftovers, while the Roomba vacuumed up for us. The hubby took a quick nap and then we headed over to Mel’s house for games. At Mel’s we played dachshund themed Monopoly game followed by poker. I lost badly at both games.

Now we’re finishing the day at my brother’s house with another awesome meal. Fortunately, this one is heavy on the protein. Albeit, I couldn’t pass up Brandi’s incredible hash browns. Consequently, I have now eaten enough in one day to meet my calorie requirement for the rest of December. For the love of humanity and my clothes, I should probably fast all day tomorrow. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

Rain Rain Go Away

“Rain rain go away. Come again another day.” Like seriously, the rain can stop already. It’s been almost constant rain and storms since Sunday morning. At this point, we’ve received close to six inches of rain since this started. Clearly, that’s a bit excessive, but also effective for keeping the beaches and roads empty this holiday weekend. At any rate, it would be nice to see the sun and be able to take a walk outside with the dogs. Maybe if it was cool enough, I’d even take my run back outside!

Since the weather wasn’t cooperated, I again took my run inside. I was a little worried that my heart rate would go high since I took my T3 later than normal, but the run went okay. My peak heart rate was definitely higher than normal, but overall my heart rate was only slightly higher than normal. During the course of the run, I finished season 10 of Curb, I really hope there will be an eleventh season. The nice thing is I’m back to a point in my training where the run is more enjoyable than it is arduous. I guess it helps when it doesn’t feel like your chest and bosom are going to explode.

My post stretch routine took me right into my Tuesday yoga class with Monica. Today’s class was a gentle flow, but with some additional poses over Monday’s class. For years, half moon pose was elusive on both sides due to my tight hamstrings. However, since restarting my practice in late October, my hamstrings have opened up making the pose accessible on both sides. This may seem a bit silly, but it’s pretty exciting to me. The lack of flexibility and mobility in my legs undoubtedly contributed to my tendon injury. Being able to open up my muscles and improve my mobility while resistance training and running is a huge win for me.

After yoga, I grabbed some leftovers from yesterday. The pasta was amazing. Then I made myself some coffee and enjoyed a nice chat with my folks. My mom and dad have been working the garden, so it’s nice to hear about what is in bloom. Unfortunately, they might get some hail tonight or heavy rains that may damage the peony blooms. They are my absolute favorite and I hate that we can’t grow them here in Florida. Hopefully, my mom’s peonies don’t get taken out by poor weather tonight.

I spent the rest of my afternoon working on my websites, stretching my shoulder and reading insipid posts on Facebook. In fact, I truly read some of the most ridiculous things today. Following the list, I’ve added a gif of Larry David, which sums up my feelings nicely. Here’s a sampling:

  • COVID-19 is actually a bacteria and WHO is lying to everyone…
  • Wearing a mask leads to hypercapnia, which has a 71% chance of killing you, which is a significantly higher risk than dying from COVID19. Finally, we have an explanation for what’s killing 100% of the doctors and nurses wearing masks throughout their 12 hour shifts! #smh
  • JFK Jr. really isn’t dead…. wow – just wow!
  • COVID19 isn’t spread by asymptomatic carriers. This is just dangerous! It is spread by carriers.

If there’s anything this pandemic has taught me, it’s that we need to be careful in the information we take in. There’s so much information and misinformation out there that it’s not surprising people are anxious. Chiefly, the amount and disparate nature of the information can be alarming, which is why we need to selective in our sources. Facebook groups filled with opinions are not a reliable source for facts. Nor has the mainstream media been for that matter, which is why I’m a fan of sticking to the Mayo Clinic, my doctors and John Hopkins for information. When you cut out the crap, your anxiety levels will decline.

Lastly, here’s a quick update on Goalielocks’ friend. Yesterday he was moved from ICU to the ortho floor, which was a huge step for him. Additionally, he was supposed to have surgery on his shoulder, but his doctor was able to reset the shoulder without surgery. This kid is a walking and talking miracle!!!! Your prayers are making a difference, so please keep them coming.

America Strong

Today was the day the Blue Angels came to South Florida as part of their America Strong mission. Since the mission was announced late last month, I’ve been anxiously awaiting its arrival here. Originally, I had hoped we would get the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds together. Sadly that was not to be. Nevertheless, I was thrilled we’d have the chance to see the Blue Angels today.

Before we could for see the Blue Angels, I had my doctor’s appointment this morning and a workout to complete. Fortunately, my doctor’s appointment was early in the morning. This was my first Covid19/quarantine doctor appointment. Consequently, my temperature was taken before I could even proceed to an exam room. Also, everyone was wearing masks. I did, however, have an option to do a telemedicine, but I prefer the in person visit with my endo.

Most of my bloodwork was good less my free T3 which was a bit low. Some how Quest forgot to do my TSH test, which is a bit of a problem. Naturally, it’s a pretty critical lap test in the treatments of Graves’ disease. Fortunately, my primary doc had tested my TSH in mid February, so she had somewhat of a barometer. Since I’m still experiencing hypothyroid symptoms and no weight loss, my doc prescribed T3 for me. Interestingly, a small percentage of patients aren’t able to convert T4 to T3 effectively. Unfortunately, it wold appear I fall in that small percentage. All in all, the visit went well.

My morning continued with an awesome BBG ab workout. I did entirely too many sit-ups and jack knifes. My abs were sore afterwards. Worse yet, it included jumping rope for 100 rotations. In case you forgot, I suck at jumping rope. Naturally, my lack of skill here cost me a lot of time, so I didn’t get through the first and third circuit twice. The second and fourth circuit were a bit easier since they didn’t included jumping rope. Consequently, I got though both of those circuits 3 three times. Yep, my abs should feel great tomorrow.

Meanwhile Goalielocks abandoned our deal from earlier in the week and was fast asleep in his bed. Okay, so he assured me he wasn’t sleeping, but I’m not sure what else he would have been doing. I don’t think he’s started a mediation practice. Obviously, I was none to thrilled. The last thing I wanted to do was spend my morning trying to corral him out of bed. Finally, he made it downstairs in time to watch the dogs as we left to see the Blue Angels.

The Mayor and I headed to Boca a little early, so I could be sure to find a kid viewing spot. We did arrive a bit early, but it paid off as we had a great location. Not surprisingly, the parking lot had plenty of people there to watch the Blue Angels support our healthcare workers. It was a pretty awesome unifying experience. The flyover was brief, but spectacular. We hopped back in the truck to head to West Boca where they were to end their flyover.

We had twenty five minutes to make it 4.8 miles from where we were to West Boca. Not far at all. Of course this is Boca and South Florida, so traffic had other things in mind. In what I can only describe as the most South Florida thing ever, the Blue Angels beat us to West Boca. Meanwhile they had travelled to Homestead (80 miles to the south) and back as we drove west. Fortunately, we happened to be at a stoplight when they flew out of the west over West Boca Medical Center. I can’t believe we nearly missed it! Needless to say, it served as a reminder as to why I avoid Boca at all costs.

This evening I made my last meal out of our first Blue Apron box. Tonight we had steaks with cheddar potatoes and roasted vegetables. Simply put, we ate like a king. It was super yummy! The hubby prefers grilled steaks to pan cooked steaks, so next time we’ll probably just grill the steaks. As for the mashed potatoes, they were fabulous. Who doesn’t love l white cheddar? I may have added some additional Tillamook white cheddar just to be safe. Additionally, we had roasted carrots and sugar snap peas, which were very tasty.

I’m feeling a bit of relief tonight as the school week ends. We’re spending a relaxing evening on the couch with the puppies binge watching Impractical Jokers. Honestly, it’s exactly the kind of mindless, funny television that we need right now. No conspiracy theories or fairy tales here! It’s the perfect end to an arduous week of virtual school and Covid19 pandemonium. Fortunately, there is a end in sight. Our county will open to Phase 1 next week, which will include our beaches the week after. This has been a long season, but it too shall pass.
