Look Who’s Back

Well, well, look who’s back. It’s been a while since I’ve written here, but I was tired and needed a break. Like most women in their mid-forties, I’m having a lot of fun with my hormones. Thanks to perimenopause and Graves’ disease, I’ve been a bit all over the place. The one constant, however, has been fatigue.

With all that’s been going on, I decided to focus on staying fit and the family. Since I last wrote, I’ve run several 5Ks. These races have been a great opportunity to keep my focus on my goal of building my overall fitness. The goal is no longer to be the fastest, but to run the best race, while building muscle and bone, while letting go of the results. Of course, I’ve also added finishing a 10K race to my annual goals for 2026.

Meanwhile, the Mayor has been playing junior hockey with the Coral Springs Jr Cats. I have a love-hate relationship with junior hockey after our billet’s experience with an unethical hockey director. The program is new this year, so it was a risk, but the general manager is wonderful and does a great job. It’s really been a positive experience for the Mayor, my husband, and me.

You’ll get your fill of junior hockey over the next three days as we travel to Tampa for the playoffs. Hopefully, it doesn’t take six hours to get there this weekend, and we see a lot of cows. This team has the ability and grit to win it all, so it should be a fun weekend. My BFF and I are sharing an Airbnb to mitigate costs. So either way, we will have a good time.

How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success?

I was laid off from a very toxic job in 2019. It was a job that I had worked really hard for, but my old boss made my life hell the last couple of years. In the end, I had a heads up because senior leadership, far from being professional, rode down the elevator with the layoff plans face up. Whoops!

Nonetheless, it was hard to leave a team of people I loved working with every day. As tough as it was, it allowed me to spend time with my son before he left for the military. It taught me that living the corporate American dream is absolute bullshit. Instead, my life revolves around my family, my passions, my dogs, my friends, and of course, hockey. Now I’m living a happier, balanced, and fulfilling life.

Five Days

Five days until my first 5K since 2019 and The Mayor’s home opener for the Jr. Cats. While I’m nervous about both, I’m way more excited for the hockey game than I am for the 5K. To be clear, I’m going into this race with little to no expectations. Meaning I’m trying not to pressure myself to try and keep up with my pre-2018 results. Instead, I’m trying to look at it as a diagnostic tool to show the process I’ve made and help set the next goal.

After watching the sheer joy on my boy’s face last Friday, I am so excited to watch him play Saturday night. My folks are in town, so they’ll be able to watch the game with us. We also have friends coming to watch him play, which will make it extra exciting and fun. My friend’s son is in the net for the game after, so I’d like to watch some of that game too. I’m a bit concerned that I won’t make it through the Mayor’s game, however, as I have to wake up extra early for the race.

I’m altering my training schedule this week to accommodate the race. Instead of running on Tuesday and Thursday, I’m going to run tomorrow and Wednesday. I plan to do a 45 minute run tomorrow and a nice, dulcet 30-minute run on Wednesday. This way, my leg should be fully recovered and ready to go Saturday morning. Or at least I’m hoping they’ll be ready to run.

By the way, we had a fabulous rest of the weekend. Saturday, I went and watched the Typhoon’s premier game with the Mayor and my friend. Afterwards, the hubby and I headed to the Kennedys for a BBQ and the Gators game. Dinner was amazing. I wish I could say the same about the football game. Hanh added some sparkly highlights to my hair, so now I match Ava. Sunday, I ran and then spent the day with my girlfriend. It was an inspired weekend.

Share a lesson you wish you had learned earlier in life.

I wish I had learning earlier in life that comparison is the thief of joy. Everyone has a different path to walk that is uniquely theirs. Comparing yourself to someone walking a different path does nothing but distract you from your own.

New Season, New Team

Tomorrow marks the start of a new season with a new team for the Mayor. He’ll be playing with the Coral Springs Jr Cats in the USPHL. Tomorrow they’ll open their season in Estero against the Florida Everblades. We’re excited for the season to start, but we’re not loving the 11:45 am game time on a weekday.

The games this season will be full NHL-length games. This makes me a little nervous for him. He’ll need to learn how to manage his blood sugar through the 20-minute periods as well as the 20-minute breaks in between. It will be interesting to see how it goes tomorrow. As with everything else related to diabetes, it will be a learning experience and somewhat of a science experiment.

So what is Junior hockey? It’s the hockey that exists between club or high school hockey and college hockey. The goal of junior hockey is to improve your game so you can play at the collegiate level. That’s the goal for a lot of folks. For others, it serves as a great way to spend a gap year between high school and college. Not everyone is ready to start college immediately. Junior hockey is a great way to grow their independence and life skills, so they can succeed in college.

What’s your favorite word?

It starts with an f and rhymes with duck. Sorry, Mom, but it’s definitely my favorite. I found myself using it quite a lot last night, seeing the obnoxious responses to Charlie Kirk’s death. The fact that we’ve become so comfortable with violence as a means of silencing opposing voices is frightening. If you’re one of the people, cheering or trying to rationalize his death, you deserve to be a permanent guest of the devil. Social media truly does bring out the worst is so many people who don’t know they’re at best dumb and at worst a hateful sod.

Mother’s Day

I hope you all had a wonderful Mother’s Day yesterday. My weekend was quick, productive, and restful. The best part of the weekend came courtesy of the Florida Panthers, who beat Toronto Friday night and again last night. It was a perfect way to both start and end the weekend. Now we have to wait until Wednesday for game 5. I hope the Panthers continue to play as strongly as last night.

Of course, it was made better by the fact that I got to talk to all three kids yesterday. The Mayor is still at home, so he graced me with his presence. We bought him a nice acoustic guitar for his birthday, so he serenaded us with some songs he learned. Jake and Melly called on their way to an open house and then showed us the property, which is super cute. Last night on his way home from work, Goalielocks called me, so I was able to talk with him for a good thirty minutes. It was the perfect way to end my Mother’s day after an emphatic Panthers’ performance.

Saturday, I did a lot of chores and baking. It was all about sourdough Saturday. I prepared two loaves of sourdough sandwich bread to be baked on Sunday. Afterwards, I mixed up a sourdough brioche Biscoff wreath for dessert. I would usually bake it with Nutella, but my dad is allergic to hazelnuts. Afterwards, I made Brazilian cheese bread to go with dinner. It’s a great option for the Mayor as it’s low carb (10 grams of carbs with 4 grams of protein.)

Share a story about someone who had a positive impact on your life.

In honor of Mother’s Day, my mom and my grandma have had a hugely positive impact on my life. First of all, they taught me what it means to be a mother. They also taught me what it is to be a strong and independent woman.

Epic

To say the Team USA and Team Canada game was epic on Saturday night would be an understatement. It was the best hockey game I have watched in a very long time. The sheer level of talent on the ice at any given time was mind-blowing. I mean Team Canada’s roster features to generational talents in Crosby and McDavid. It doesn’t get better than that.

The start to the game was as epic as the game. The Tkachuk bots threw done and JT Miller joined the party. Three fights in nine seconds to start the game was incredible to watch. Obviously, the players in both teams were there to compete. There easily non of this bull shit All Star game nonsense where folks don’t try. This game, the first in nine years, as a big deal for the players. It was an emotional opportunity to represent their country.

Whoever came up with the Four Nations FaceOff idea at the NHL should be given a raise. I don’t like Gary Bettman, but I must give him his flowers for this concept. Okay, maybe I won’t send him a floral arrangement, but you get my drift. The compete level in every game of this tournament has been at the highest level. Honestly, the hockey has been so good, that I’ll be sad when it’s over.

This afternoon Team Canada handled Finland. Finland dug themselves into a hole during the first period and they couldn’t get out of it. They made a really aggressive push at the end, but Team Canada came away with a 5-3 win. I was hoping Finland would at least take them into overtime. Finland had to be riding high after defeating Sweden in overtime on Saturday afternoon. That game was also epic.

Tonight Team USA takes on Team Sweden, which will be another great game. Otter will be in the net giving Hellebuyck a well-deserved night off. Hellebucyk has been a difference-maker for Team USA this tournament. Charlie McAvoy and Matthew Tkachuk are out of the lineup today as well. Not sure what’s up with McAvoy, but Tkachuk sustained a lower-body injury Saturday night. Hopefully, Chucky is fine and they’re resting him out of an abundance of caution.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day from me to you. I’m not the biggest fan of this Hallmark holiday. Heck, I kind of forgot it existed until a guy at work started posting love songs in the team chat. I may post a breakup song in the chat just to mess with him. Plus, not everyone feels love on Valentine’s Day.

My Valentine’s gift to myself was watching the Bash Brothers, aka the Tkachuk brothers, playing for Team USA last night. The squad looked great! I loved that Matt Boldy and Brock Faber connected for the go ahead go. The Wild boys looked great. Team USA turned on the gas in the third, but I thought the Panther players on both teams crushed it.

Tomorrow Team Finland and Team Sweden have the matinee game, which will be amazing. There is no love lost between these two countries, so it will be an entertaining and passionate game. Team USA and Team Canada take the ice at 8:00 pm, which means I’ll be up past my bed time again. That should be another great game. So no red roses for me this Valentine’s Day, I’m happy to enjoy some great hockey with my sweethearts.

If there were a biography about you, what would the title be?

The title of my very interesting biography would be All Aboard The Hot Mess Express. I think the title says it all.

Fabulous

We had a fabulous weekend!! Friday night was spent watching hockey and chilling with the puppies. The Mayor had a “mandatory” practice, so we binged Dexter in his absence. Consequently, we had a restful Friday night, which was the perfect setup for an extremely busy Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday we headed down to Amerant Arena to tailgate with the Kennedys before the Panthers game. For the first time in months, it was actually quite hot outside. The arena was nice and cold. The Panthers took on the Chicago Blackhawks and gave up a goal within seven seconds of the puck drop. Thankfully, it was the last goal they’d give up on Saturday. It’s so impressive seeing Barkov and Tkachuk play in person. Barkov is an absolute magician on the ice.

After the game ended, the Hubby, John and I headed to the casino. Unfortunately, we spent the afternoon losing on the terrace. We decided to try our luck inside but found none. Mercifully, we took a dinner break and enjoyed an amazing steak at Farraday’s. My lemon drop martini was also mighty tasty. After dinner and a double shot of fireball, we were back on the slots. We built up quite the reservoir of credits over a couple of hours but lost it all in a matter of minutes. Oh well, we had an absolute blast.

Sunday we ran to Walmart to get the Mayor some work boots and Dickies for his new job. Afterwards, we crashed on the couch until we had to leave for the Mayor’s game. Last night’s game was one that they should have won. As it turns out, it’s hard to win a hockey game when it’s played as an individual game and not a team sport. Oh well! Learning to lose and lose gracefully is integral to learning to win and to live life. The Mayor’s team is supremely talented, so I’m excited to see how they channel this adversity. Overall, the ending wasn’t great, but the weekend was fabulous.

Something on your “to-do list” that never gets done.

This question is a bit offensive. It presumes that any of my to-do list gets down. Sometimes I feel like my to-do list is like footprints that get erased by the waves. In my case, the waves would be time.

Sunday Best

Yesterday it was all about our Sunday best. We combined two of my favorite things for a fantastic day. Since my older brother and his wife were in town, we sandwiched brunch with the Mayor’s last youth hockey home games. If you’re feeling Deja VU, that’s normal. We thought he gave youth hockey for juniors two years ago, but he realized the shit show that is Junior hockey isn’t worth the time or money. This time he is aging out. Consequently, my twenty-one-year career as a youth hockey mom is coming to a close.

The Mayor played his first games yesterday wearing the Omnipod. I’m thrilled to report that his blood sugar was much better controlled during the game with the pump. For the first time since his diagnosis, I wasn’t stressed about his blood sugar during the games. He also played great and I think the pump helped. We’re blessed that the technology exists to manage type 1 diabetes effectively. It’s an absolute game changer for type 1 patients and their families.

Back to hockey, his team won both games but insisted on making the second game more interesting. The Mayor played defense for the first game and forward for the second. He scored a gorgeous goal in the third period of the second game. After the dominant six-goal third period it almost seemed silly to quibble over the first two periods. We are all, however, hockey parents and therefore always the critic. In the end, the first two periods were not great, but the third period showed off the team’s resilience, perseverance, and skill. Turns out the team brought their Sunday best.

Brunch between games was the perfect way to spend the day. We met my brothers at the Patio Bar & Grill at the Wyndham on the Beach in Deerfield Beach. The view from the restaurant was second to none. I love looking out over Deerfield Beach and the fishing pier. The waves were beautiful, but it was a bit cold with the breeze coming off the ocean. Our food, as well as the company, was tremendous and I’ll go back again. I love it!

What books do you want to read?

Right now I’m finishing Armadale and then I’m going to start on a biography of Henry Bolingbroke and his cousin Richard I. I’m looking forward to reading the analysis of their relationship.

About Last Weekend

About last weekend, I had a blast in Nashville. Technically, we were there for hockey. Unfortunately, the hockey was not nearly as good as our nights out in Nashville. The first game was beyond abysmal. Apparently, the boy had forgotten how to play hockey. Honestly, it didn’t get much better from there on out.

Typically, the hockey is front and center on these trips, but it wasn’t this time. And thank god for that. The hockey was ancillary to all the fun I had with my Mayor and my fellow hockey parents. The hockey will end and the biggest takeaway will be the incredible memories we’ve created. I have more to say on hockey and am on the verge of saying it, but that can wait until my boy is fully done playing. Hockey folks can be sensitive, so for his survival and mine my lips are sealed.

The cherry on top of the shit hockey was the Mayor getting injured in the early Monday game. For some unknown reason, the tournament felt the U-18 teams and their parents should revisit the early morning game hell that usually ends in squirts. To make matters worse, the 5:40 am wake-up call was greeted by temperatures that were barely above zero. You can imagine my feelings when the Mayor was injured early in the game.

List five things you do for fun.

Here’s my list of fun activities:

  • Read
  • Run
  • Watch hockey
  • Yoga
  • Bake
  • And of course play with my dogs

Is it 6:00

Is it 6:00 yet? I’m just asking for a friend who has a serious case of the Mondays. This friend is longing to be cuddling up on her couch with her sweet puppy while watching Dexter. Sadly, she’s currently stuck in her desk chair as the minutes tick by slowly. I, I mean my friend, was lucky that she wasn’t impacted by a massive VPN outage at work this morning. Nonetheless, she’s ready for the day to be over.

We were supposed to have a department-wide meeting today, but that got moved to tomorrow. Our corporate headquarters is in the Midwest and got walloped over the weekend by a blizzard. Have I mentioned that I’m glad I live in Florida? I’d be happy to never experience a blizzard again. Anyway, I’m hoping the meeting brings some good changes. Although I’m a bit nervous they’ll be changing our comp plan that will negatively impact us agents. Fingers crossed!

My sales assistants have been slacking today

You may have noticed my prognostications, while vague, for the Vikings game came to fruition. Detroit’s quarterback played great and ours saw ghosts. It’s not a dig on Darnold, but as a lifelong fan, I knew my Vikes were going to disappoint on the biggest stage of the year. Fortunately, they’re still in the playoffs, so there’s still a smidgen of a chance they make it all the way. (As I type this, I’m envisioning Lloyd Christmas in Dumb & Dumber saying “so you’re telling me there’s a chance. Yeah!”). By the way, it it 6:00 yet?

If you had a freeway billboard, what would it say?

My billboard would say “The world owes you nothing.” I speak to people across the country daily. So many of the folks, I talk to are absolute gems. They make my job enjoyable and worthwhile whether they buy or not. Conversely, some people I talk with think the world owes them everything. I don’t know how this entitlement took hold, but it’s insidious. So while my billboard may be harsh, it’s honest.
