Happy 19th Birthday!

Happy 19th birthday to my youngest baby, The Mayor. I can’t believe he’s already 19 years old. It seems like just yesterday we were bringing him home. After Goalielocks was born, we were certain that two kids were enough. Fortunately, God felt otherwise and brought us the Mayor. He’s been an absolute blessing.

This last year, his first year of adulthood, has had a lot of ups and downs. His older brother’s getting married was definitely a high point. I was so proud of how he showed up for both Jake and Melody in the lead-up to the wedding and the wedding. His diagnosis of type 1 in the fall was a nasty surprise, but he’s done an incredible job managing his blood sugar.

I’m excited to see what the future holds for him. Over the last year, he’s proven again and again that he’s resilient. His ability to persevere through life’s challenges will carry him far. He’ll graduate from high school in a few weeks, which will be a bittersweet moment for us. It will mark the end of an era for my hubby and me, and the start of a new chapter in our lives. As we embark on our new chapter, the Mayor will determine his next steps.

What’s a job you would like to do for just one day?

I would become an archaeologist who gets to travel the world with the purpose of finding antediluvian artifacts.

Field Trip

We took the dogs on a field trip to the beach yesterday. I’ve wanted to take the dogs to the beach for a while now, but the timing never worked out. I initially decided to forego the beach yesterday because there were storms out east in the morning. Once our WiFi dipped out and we had nothing else to do, we decided to try it.

Neither Anakin nor Arrow enjoys riding in the car, so that was fun. Arrow gets absolutely unruly, so we had him strapped in a harness and a seatbelt. Otherwise, he’d make his way to the front of the truck and probably cause an accident. Anakin hates it too, but he sits peacefully in the back. Unfortunately, we hit every red light on the drive to the beach. Fortunately, our luck changed when we got to the beach, and we found parking immediately.

Once at the beach, we walked next to the inlet and under the road. The dogs were taking in all the new sights and scents. On the north side, you can bring your dogs. There were several other puppies there. Initially, we had planned to walk down the beach for a bit, but there were a few off-leash pups, so we stayed put. We were relatively close to the jetty and boulders that line it.

Arrow was a bit unsure. I think. The waves were a bit loud for his ears. Anakin, on the other hand, wanted to attack the waves and drink all the water. All in all, I think they enjoyed their field trip. We’ll definitely put another field trip to the beach in the calendar for when the sea is a bit calmer. This way, they can swim and play a bit in the sea.

What are your favorite brands and why?

I have a few. My favorite coffee brand is Dunkin’. It’s the best way to start my day. In terms of clothing, I love my Fabletics athleisure wear. Honestly, I totally live in my Fabletics.

Happy Birthday Arrow

Happy birthday Arrow! Our sweet boy is three years old today. He’s been the best dog for us. Arrow is always happy, playful, and loving. In fact, he reminds me a lot of Athena. They share similar dispositions and mannerisms. Both Arrow and Athena are adept at defusing Anakin’s emotional outbursts. When we first adopted Arrow, Anakin was not a fan. Now, however, Anakin and Arrow are best mates.

I bought Arrow a couple of new dog toys and some doggy ice cream to celebrate. I’m sure he’ll love the ice cream. He definitely is a dog that likes to eat. He also loves toys, so I know he’ll love the goodies I got him. I can also be sure Anakin will try to steal and guard both toys. Outside of the goodies, I plan to take them to the beach on Sunday morning. It will be interesting to see how they like the sand and waves.

Outside of Arrow’s birthday, it’s been business as usual. Today was a strength day, so I did my ab workout through the Sweat App. After work, I’ll do my ten-minute jump rope routine. I added it initially to help with my stamina for running. Now I also do it to help build bone strength. Needless to say, I won’t be on the elliptical anymore. Everything I do from here on out will be to help build bone mass.

What gives you direction in life?

I don’t rely on good luck; I use my faith to drive me. My family’s needs give me direction in life.

Struggle

The struggle is real. From parenting to sleeping, rinsing, and repeating the struggle is real. We’ve been on the struggle bus the last few months with the Mayor. He’s 18 and newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, which makes parenting a little bit spicy. Honestly, he doesn’t like us asking about his blood sugar or anything else. Why is raising teenagers/adult children so difficult?

He got a car in December which is amazing, but since he’s gotten the car he’s changed. Since he has his car, he no longer helps around the house or with the dogs. Clearly, he was only helping so he could have the use of our vehicle Asking for any kind of assistance results in a major attitude. Honestly, parenting littles is tough, but nobody prepares you for the difficulty of parenting adult children. Anyway, I know we’re not the only parents on the struggle bus.

Describe the most ambitious DIY project you’ve ever taken on.

I once decided to build myself a bookshelf. It went well until I put the shelves on backward. My hubby ended up rebuilding it for me.

Reese’s

So we go through Reese’s cup in this house like they’re going out of style. They’re the Mayor’s go-to emergency snack to bring his sugar up. They’re ideal because they have ample carbs and some protein. Originally we stored them in the fridge, but it was way too easy access for the hubby and I. It was also cool enough outside to stash them in his diabetes storage drawers.

We quickly learned the best way to replenish the stash was to hit up the post-holiday sales. Nothing beats Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups at half price. Also, the holiday ones tend to be more fresh. We already killed the Valentine’s Day peanut butter cups. In fact, the Mayor was yelling at the hubby and me for eating the cups out of his stash. Mind you he’s never been without an emergency stash and we’re paying for the cups. The only other person who wouldn’t be happy with my coffee and peanut butter cup diet would be my doctor.

Jake’s wife Melly makes these amazing peanut butter balls, which I should learn to make. They’re truly little masterpieces of chocolate and peanut butter. It would probably save us some money at Target as we’d no longer buy all the bags of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. The Mayor also has a stash of Powerade and Gatorade, which helps keep his sugar moderated during the day. It’s quick too since it’s liquid. After several months of living with type 1, we’re starting to settle into the new normal. It’s just our new normal can be a bit shifty and tenuous at times.

If you could permanently ban a word from general usage, which one would it be? Why?

I wouldn’t permanently ban a word, but would ban the overuse of words. For example, folks throw out words like communist, fascist, and socialist for every person they disagree with politically. These words have heavy meanings and heavy implications, so to overuse them to the point they lose their meaning is dangerous.

Blah

Blah is how I’m feeling about today. At least, my work is a bit blah. The phones, once again, have not been kind. I will never understand why everyone thinks they are entitled to get everything free. I don’t understand where this sense of entitlement comes from. Whose legacy is that gonna be? One thing I’m sure of is that a Team USA victory last night would have made today less blah.

Anyway, enough complaining about silly people. I do love my job and the flexibility it brings. Working remotely makes it a million times easier to live a balanced life. While I do sometimes miss listening to music in my car, I don’t miss my hour commute in the morning and hour commute in the evening. Honestly, working from home makes sticking to my fitness and baking goals achievable.

By the way, when did our news media hit rock bottom? Where I live there are a lot of things going on all the time. Yesterday was not a slow news day. To preface my statements, the President also lives in my county and this is our second term with him. Our local news channel ran a story about a guy seeing fighter jets (F-16s) flying over our area and he couldn’t figure out why. Nor could the reporter, who even called the Air Force for a comment. One, the Air Force doesn’t tell you what they’re doing. Two is that this is his second term in office, people here should know the drill. Part of keeping the President secure is fighter jets in our air space.

Honestly, I read that news report and it made me wish I couldn’t read. Coincidentally, the fighters were up over our skies again this morning. I could hear the distinctive roar of the fighter jet from my yoga mat. It reminded me of visiting Jake in Utah and hearing the fighter jets. Personally, I love seeing them in the skies. They’re wicked cool to watch. Also, they remind me of my airman. Now if the fighters were screaming over us, I may be a bit nervous.

Share one of the best gifts you’ve ever received.

My family is the best gift I’ve gotten.

Busy

This past weekend was incredibly busy. We had a diabetes class for the Mayor scheduled all day Saturday. He was super cranky Saturday morning and his blood sugar was sky high. His insulin pod died in the middle of the night and he refused to change it. Consequently, the phone was dinging every five minutes all night long. Needless to say, none of us were well-rested or ready to spend a day in the classroom.

The Mayor was the only type 1 diabetic in the class of mostly boomers. Our saving grace was Winnie a diabetic since 2005 with an A1C of 10. She was the anti-hero of the day because she was such a hot mess, she had us all entertained. The Mayor eventually started chirping her because of the ridiculous things she would say. When the class started, she introduced herself with her A1C like it was AA and not a diabetes education class. She was upset when nobody else felt like sharing their A1C.

Saw Air Force One on the drive home

She was also the antihero because her behavior definitely drove the cost of care. When the nurse educator explained it’s best to eat the protein, vegetables and then the carbs, so the sugar doesn’t spike as quickly. Winnie took that to mean the protein cancelled out the carbs and she could still eat her two pieces of pie. Winnie then scolded the nurse educator for trying to make her choose between pecan pie and strawberry cream pie. The elevator was not making it to the top floor for Miss Winnie.

Fortunately, the nurse educator was able to get through the material quickly. Part of the treatment plan for a newly diagnosed or new diabetic patient practices is one one-on-one nutrition counseling and the diabetes seminar. At first I thought it was overkill, but then I met Winnie. Successfully managing diabetes takes a great doctor, but it also takes a patient who is willing to educate themselves and actively manage their condition.

Write about your dream home.

I always envisioned my dream house as a large mansion on the beach with several opulent rooms overlooking the water. This house would have enough rooms, so every person could occupy their own beach front room. Rumor has it that as we get older we get more practical. Now my dream home is anywhere my family and puppies lay their heads.

Check In

We’re finishing the first full week of February, so I thought I’d check in with my New Year’s resolutions. As I thought about them during my workout, I thought about how resolutions can quickly become meaningless. For me, this year’s resolutions were about committing to making myself and my life better. I do, however, miss those afternoon lattes.

My strength work today was brutal, so I had to give myself pep talks to get through it. I had to remind myself that the hard I’m doing is to make me better. Learning to persevere through the hard, brutal stuff like burpees with pushups, helps us persevere in other areas of life. I also felt immensely proud and satisfied when I finished the workout, giving it my best. In my formative years, I remember my parents being committed (they still are) to their daily walk. Seeing their commitment to their fitness and wellbeing has stuck with me.

2024 was rough, but 2025 is all about becoming a juggernaut. And by juggernaut, I mean the best version of myself. The schedule change has helped. I love getting up working out and then starting work. By the time my lunch hour is done, I’ve completed my workouts for the day. Once I’ve finished working for the day, I’ve completed all the items on my to-do list except for reading. I read every night, so that’s an easy checkmark on my to-do list.

Do you need a break? From what?

I absolutely need a break from 2025. In fact, I’m quite confident that I’m not alone in this feeling. The world is a scary place right now and life is tough. I think we’d all like to take a collective deep breath before rejoining 2025.

Wanderlust

Webster’s dictionary defines wanderlust as a strong desire to travel or wander. I, my friends, am here to announce that I am suffering from wanderlust. It’s a hereditary condition. In fact, I can confirm that my siblings and I all suffer from it. For me, I think it started with the little adventures my grandma and parents would take us on. My mom gave me some pictures of my older brother, my grandma, and myself off the beaten path at Minnehaha Falls. The adults in my life did a test job at creating an appreciation for new experiences and places.

There are so many moments that stick out for me from our Norway trip. Two in particular are my grandmother’s reaction to the scenery. The glimmer in her eye and childlike wonderment at the scenery before her. She was 87 when we made that trip, but her joy was childlike. I would add that both times I had to send Jake after her because she started climbing or hiking off on her own.

My kids have inherited this love of travel and I couldn’t be happier. We had so many incredible adventures in Utah while Jake was stationed there. The Cottonwood Canyons will always be one of my favorite places on the planet. Of course, Southern Utah is also the top of that list. Jake and I had so many incredible adventures through the Mighty Five. The Mayor had a great time in both Detroit and Nashville. I can’t wait to explore more of this world with them.

How do significant life events or the passage of time influence your perspective on life?

As the years have passed, I am amazed at how fast time has flown by. My Instagram feed, which used to be dominated by hockey, kid pics, and dog videos is now dominated by perimenopause videos, hockey, and dog videos. I’m not old enough for perimenopause, nor are my friends. That stuff is for our parents. Except it isn’t anymore, is it? Aging is a privilege denied by many, but damn it is not easy.

Sunday Best

Yesterday it was all about our Sunday best. We combined two of my favorite things for a fantastic day. Since my older brother and his wife were in town, we sandwiched brunch with the Mayor’s last youth hockey home games. If you’re feeling Deja VU, that’s normal. We thought he gave youth hockey for juniors two years ago, but he realized the shit show that is Junior hockey isn’t worth the time or money. This time he is aging out. Consequently, my twenty-one-year career as a youth hockey mom is coming to a close.

The Mayor played his first games yesterday wearing the Omnipod. I’m thrilled to report that his blood sugar was much better controlled during the game with the pump. For the first time since his diagnosis, I wasn’t stressed about his blood sugar during the games. He also played great and I think the pump helped. We’re blessed that the technology exists to manage type 1 diabetes effectively. It’s an absolute game changer for type 1 patients and their families.

Back to hockey, his team won both games but insisted on making the second game more interesting. The Mayor played defense for the first game and forward for the second. He scored a gorgeous goal in the third period of the second game. After the dominant six-goal third period it almost seemed silly to quibble over the first two periods. We are all, however, hockey parents and therefore always the critic. In the end, the first two periods were not great, but the third period showed off the team’s resilience, perseverance, and skill. Turns out the team brought their Sunday best.

Brunch between games was the perfect way to spend the day. We met my brothers at the Patio Bar & Grill at the Wyndham on the Beach in Deerfield Beach. The view from the restaurant was second to none. I love looking out over Deerfield Beach and the fishing pier. The waves were beautiful, but it was a bit cold with the breeze coming off the ocean. Our food, as well as the company, was tremendous and I’ll go back again. I love it!
