This morning was all about karma at the doctor’s office. I finally had my appointment with my new doctor after my last doctor retired. I say finally because I had only rescheduled it three times. The waiting room was pleasantly near empty when I arrived, so I was hopeful my visit would be quick. I was wrong, but I digress.
So here’s the backstory to the karma. As our boys have grown up, we’ve always tried to take them to professionals from diverse backgrounds. Honesty, I didn’t want my boys to see people based on stereotypes they seen in the movies or the news. Moreover, it is important to me that my boys grow up being comfortable with a female doctor.
It’s all gone pretty. Well except the time I booked their physical appointments with the new pediatrician (female) in the office. Goalielocks and the Mayor we’re still quite young, but my oldest was in middle school and had just hit puberty.
The appointment started like any other appointment and then the doctor walked in. My boys were a bit taken back when a smoking hot, young blonde doctor walked into the room. Naturally, my oldest was mortified. If ever in a young boys life there was a time for this not to happen, this was the time. I felt horrible. Puberty and middle school are bad enough and then your mom takes you to a doctor that looks like she just took off her Victoria Secret Angel wings.
Which brings me to my karma at the doctor’s office….. As the new medical assistant took my vitals, she asked if I had any concerns. I said I did, I’m fat, old and tired. Okay, so I didn’t say it exactly like that, but you get my gist. She finished taking my medical history and said the doc would be in shortly.
As I waited, I worked my emails and IM at work to make productive use of my time. I heard ruffling of the feathers and was going it might now be my turn (60 minutes after my appointment time.). Indeed it was my turn, I prepared to introduce myself to my new doctor, who happens to be an older woman. Instead a young good looking and male medical student walks in and introduced himself. #fml
To be clear, the medical student did a great job and had good bedside manner, but none of that really mattered at that moment. Now in my head I’m scrambling because I definitely don’t want to tell this hot Med student that I’m fat, old and tired as it’s not a good look. At the same time, I wanted to be honest with my concerns, so I left out the old part. I decided since he has eyes, he probably already saw that I was tired and chunky.
The whole time I’m dying on the inside. It was so totally my karma for taking my newly post pubescent to a pediatrician that looked like a Victoria’s Secret angel. My Med student, who they wouldn’t let me take home, did a great job and will make a great doctor. However, I’m on the fence about my new doctor. I guess I’ll have to see how my follow up appointment goes next month.
