Nashville

Nashville was amazing. The Mayor had a tournament there this weekend, so we flew up early Friday morning. Thankfully, we got home late last night. Obviously, we are so glad to be back in the warm air. My only complaint about Nashville, aside from lackluster hockey, was the weather. Clearly, it was entirely too cold and too dry for us Floridians.

Friday night we started by hanging out on the Vanderbilt campus, which is stunning. Obviously, we had to take pictures at the wings and visit Kittenish (Jesse James Decker’s store). Both the wings and the store provided the perfect backdrop for photos. After the photo shoot, I had the best chicken sandwich at the Pub down the block. It was so perfect pre-game food.

Afterwards, the kids headed back to the hotel and the parents headed for the party bus. The Honky Tonk Party Express drove us around Broadway blasting music and serving drinks. We had an absolute blast! Midway through the journey, we stopped at a brewery for a bathroom and shot break. For our shot, we chose the sour watermelon moonshine. Honestly, it was pretty darn good. Since I had a very early start to the date, it felt late when we got back to the hotel at 10:30.

Saturday night after the kids’ game, we headed downtown to Jason Aldean’s bar. Since most of the kids they served food at his bar, the kids could enjoy some live music and a meal with their parents. After dinner, we sent the kids back to the hotel with a couple of the parents who were ready to call it a night. The rest of us, however, headed to Jelly Roll’s new bar, which was fabulous. We even saw him twice. My only complaint about the bar scene in Nashville is that there is a profane amount of stairs in each of the bars.

Saturday night, or Sunday morning, we rolled into the hotel at 2:00 am with 20 chicken tacos. Our Uber driver was simply the best. I slept better Saturday night than I’ve slept in months. For the first time, I woke up Sunday morning feeling refreshed. Who knew it would take two nights out and many stairs to fix my sleeping conundrum. The months since the Mayor’s diagnosis have been tough. Friday night and Saturday night out in Nashville with good friends was exactly what the doctor ordered. I’ll update y’all on the hockey tomorrow.

Spring Cleaning Essentials

Spring cleaning essentials: the must-have items to refresh your home. As the days grow longer and the temperature rises, it’s time to shake off the winter blues and embrace the freshness of spring. Along with the blossoming flowers, spring brings the annual tradition of cleaning and decluttering our homes. Having the right tools can make a world of difference when sprucing up your living space. Here are some essential items to consider adding to your spring cleaning arsenal:

  1. All-Purpose Cleaner: A versatile all-purpose cleaner is a must-have for tackling various surfaces throughout your home. Look for a cleaner that is effective yet gentle enough for use on countertops, appliances, and bathroom fixtures. Opt for eco-friendly options to minimize your environmental impact.
  2. Microfiber Cloths: Ditch the disposable paper towels and opt for reusable microfiber cloths instead. These cloths are highly effective at trapping dust and dirt without leaving behind streaks or lint. Use them for dusting, wiping down surfaces, and cleaning mirrors and windows.
  3. Vacuum Cleaner with Attachments: A reliable vacuum cleaner is essential for keeping floors clean. Be careful to not overlook the importance of attachments for tackling hard-to-reach areas. Look for a vacuum with a crevice tool for cleaning those areas. Finally, It should also have a brush attachment for upholstery and curtains. I love my Shark Rotator vacuum.
  4. Mop and Bucket or steam mop: Give your floors a deep clean with a mop and bucket combo. Choose a mop with a reusable microfiber or sponge head that can be easily wrung out to prevent streaks. For hardwood floors, consider using a gentle cleaning solution specifically formulated for wood surfaces.
  5. Scrub Brushes: For stubborn stains and grime, a scrub brush is your best friend. Keep a variety of brushes on hand, including a stiff-bristled brush for scrubbing tile grout and a soft-bristled brush for delicate surfaces like glass shower doors.
  6. Organizational Tools: Spring cleaning isn’t just about tidying up—it’s also an opportunity to declutter and organize your space. Invest in storage bins, baskets, and drawer organizers to corral clutter and make it easier to find what you need.
  7. Air Purifier: Improve the air quality in your home by investing in an air purifier. These devices help remove allergens, dust, and other pollutants from the air, creating a healthier indoor environment for you and your family.
  8. Squeegee: Keep your windows sparkling clean with a squeegee. This simple tool is highly effective at removing streaks and water spots, leaving your windows crystal clear and letting in more natural light.
  9. Odor Eliminator: Banish unpleasant odors from your home with an odor eliminator spray or diffuser. Choose a fresh, clean scent like lemon or lavender to impart a welcoming atmosphere throughout your space.
  10. Rubber Gloves: Last but not least, protect your hands from harsh cleaning chemicals and bacteria with a pair of rubber gloves. Opt for gloves with a textured grip to prevent slipping and ensure a secure hold on cleaning tools.

With these essential items in your cleaning arsenal, you’ll be well-equipped to tackle any spring cleaning challenge that comes your way. So roll up your sleeves, open the windows, and let the rejuvenating spirit of spring inspire you to refresh and revitalize your home. Happy cleaning!

My Tribe

I’ve spent the last week in paradise with what has become my tribe. This group of incredible women that I’ve come to know over the last six years is amazing. We came together from all walks of life and locations, yet our understanding, love and support of each others as mothers and women is unmatched. I’m so blessed to have not only met these women, but to have come friends with them.

Paradise, Tulum, was absolutely incredible. It’s a not a place a soon forget. And one that I hope I will be able to return to soon. I’ll write more about that later. I made it home late last night and right in time for PurpleStride. While I didn’t love the 4:30 am wake up, the chance to be with my PanCan people, my tribe was another blessing. As I got to the event I was filled with a sense of contentment. How lucky am I that I spent a week with My tribe in Mexico and came home to spend my morning with my PanCan family. I’m blessed to have found my people.

PurpleStride is PanCan’s marquis event and our largest fundraiser of the year. Today it’s happening all across the country, less Colorado where the event was cancelled due to protestors and the inability to ensure our participants safety. Our event was amazing. The vibe was positive and the turnout was incredible. We could have done with less wind, but alas we can’t control the weather. Nevertheless, it was another successful event! If only I didn’t have to go back to work on Monday…

What are your favorite emojis?

My favorite emojis to use when crafting any text or social media post are the face with tears of joy and loudly crying face.

Excited!!!

Jot down the first thing that comes to your mind.

Excited!!! In less than 24 hours, I’ll be well on my way to paradise. I cannot wait to unplug and chill with some of my favorite people. I’ve finally started to pack. My goal for this trip is to use only a carry-on for the trip. This is a big step for me as I’m a consummate over-packer. As I type this, I’m sitting on my packing cube to try and flatten it. I’m choosing to be an optimist in this endeavor.

One thing I’m not excited about is that a raccoon found Bella the duck’s nest. When I took Anakin out this morning Bella was uncharacteristically sitting in the road. Our neighbor Mark picked her up and Carrie has been nursing her back to health. Meanwhile, I found some broken eggs around the tree. A few eggs were remaining, which are now with Bella at our neighbor’s house. Anyway, I better get back to packing!

Let’s Go!

Let’s go! Less than 24 hours until I check into my flight for Momcation!! Honestly, pretty soon I’ll be counting down the minutes. I cannot wait to spend a week relaxing and doing nothing with some of my favorite people. I’ve completed my packing list, so now I have to start packing. Well, first I should probably finish my laundry. Since I’m packing light, I’ve decided to bring no makeup. This is a big step even though I wore no makeup last year. I had it if I needed it.

Speaking of laundry, I love my new washing machine. It’s so quiet! Our old washer sounded like it was about to take off or vibrate through the wall. It was so loud that Athena would start barking back at it. Apparently, the loud washer presented a threat to all of our safety. It wasn’t a safety threat, but it was an annoyance. We would have to turn up the TV every time we did the wash. Now you can’t hear it all from the family room.

Speaking of things that need replacing, I’ve decided to hold off on replacing the broken bird feeder. Once I get back from vacation, I’m going to buy a feeder that includes a camera. Right now I can’t watch the birds unless I’m sitting in my living room. If I get a feeder that has a camera, I’ll be able to watch it from anywhere. Additionally, it will help us identify all the birds and animals that have become a part of our menagerie.

Idiom of the day: every path has its puddles.

Describe a random encounter with a stranger that stuck out positively to you.

When the boys were small, we would go grocery shopping at Target every Saturday morning. This particular trip had been particularly difficult with not one child cooperating. By the time I made it to the cash register, I was exasperated. I paid for my groceries and was about to leave when I realized I had forgotten to put the milk on the conveyor. By this time, the cashier was ready to move on to the next customer.

This beautiful older woman behind me in line must have seen the fatigue and exasperation on my face. Consequently, she immediately offered to put the milk on her ticket, so I didn’t have to get back in line. It was a small gesture and the milk cost a little over $2.00, but her kindness has stuck with me. Little acts of kindness go a long way.

48 Hours

In less than 48 hours, I will be embarking on Momcation 5.0. I cannot wait!! First of all, I can’t wait to see all the girls and meet the two new moms. Second, I have no responsibility for the entirety of the trip, which is amazing. Lastly, I love exploring and enjoying paradise. In the end, it’s a trip that is good for the soul. I can’t wait!

This is the fifth Momcation I’ve attended. Last year, we went to Puerto Vallarta, which was magical. In 20222, we ventured to Turks & Caicos, which I love. We were supposed to go there in 2020, but we all know how that went. Before the pandemic, we visited the Cayman Islands and Turks & Caicos (North Caicos.). Every location has been spectacular in its own way, so I’m looking forward to what this year’s destination will bring.

I am hoping, after I leave in 48 hours, that the Mayor and the hubby will remember to feed the birds and water my tomato. The birds have become quite accustomed to their morning feast at our house. They don’t even go into stealth mode or fly away when I walk outside now. We wouldn’t want to disappoint them or the squirrels. The tomato plant is now fruiting, so it would suck to lose it while I’m gone. I’m sure the puppies will also miss being spoiled by their mama.

Describe a decision you made in the past that helped you learn or grow.

I think the biggest decision that has helped me grow was to stop looking for happiness outside of myself. Other people can bring joy and momentary happiness, but I’m talking about the deep rooted happiness with one’s life and one’s self. At the end of the day, we can only control ourselves. Now back to working on my doodle. I’m not at all artistic, but I have found doodling and coloring throughout the day helps keep my spirits high and my mind engaged.

Great Time

I had a great time this weekend with the puppies traipsing through the neighborhood. I spent much of it at home binge-watching Sex Education on Netflix. The show is both well-written and well-acted. Gillian Anderson’s performance is amazing. Needless to say, the show was really entertaining and provided a good backdrop to my weekend and my weekend chores. I have to say it’s nice to have full authority over what I watch on television. It’s been a long time since that’s happened.

Saturday afternoon I made it out for my good friend Lisa’s birthday party. Lisa is one of my favorite Kaplan people and I hadn’t seen her in so long, so I didn’t want to miss it. The weather was looking a bit sketchy, so I was worried there’d be a shower or two, but the weather held out. This is important since the party was on a tiki taxi that cruises the Intracoastal. For $10, you can ride it for as long as you’d like and it comes back to the dock on the hour. It also has a bar onboard and a jukebox. Ok, probably not a jukebox, but the music covered all the genres much like a jukebox.

In addition to Lisa, there were a bunch of great people from Kaplan that I hadn’t seen in forever. I got laid off shortly before the pandemic, which really put a damper on all of our social lives. I’ve seen a couple of them at concerts, but it was so good to see so many folks in person again and reconnect. We ended up in the tiki taxi for a couple of hours. The weather was overcast with a nice breeze, which was perfect because it kept us from getting too hot. It was a great night.

Yesterday I spent the morning doing chores. After lunch, I headed to Terri and PJ’s house for coffee. It was nice to see them again. I haven’t seen anyone for months thanks in part to travel and an autoimmune flare. Thankfully, I think I’ve been on the upswing. Hopefully, my doctor will think so too when I go see her for a follow-up tomorrow. I ended my weekend with some sushi and more Netflix. It was a great weekend.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I was given was to cherish and enjoy my kids’ childhoods. When you’re a new mom, the advice sounds a bit cliche. When you’re the mom of a screaming toddler, the advice seems absolutely ludicrous. And when you’re dealing with a teenager and big kid problems, woah the advice can feel dead wrong. When, however, your kids leave the nest, it makes sense completely. The bad days make up such a minuscule part of your life, but the good days and joys of raising your kids far outweigh everything else. So if you’re kids are young and you’re reading this, buckle up and enjoy the ride because it’s over really fast.

Midweek

It’s midweek, which while better than Monday it isn’t Friday. Nevertheless, the majority of the work week is now behind me. I shouldn’t complain too loudly since I can work from wherever I want. This week I’m working out of my parents house in Minny. My schedule is 8-5 est, which leads me plenty of time in the evenings to workout, visit folks or just be lazy.

Last night we went to Panino’s for dinner. Panino’s was one of my favorite restaurants before we moved to Florida. I was happy to see that the restaurant hasn’t lost its sparkle. The food, I had the chicken fajita panino, was very good. In fact, it my leftovers were the perfect stay to feed my face post run. The restaurant was a lot less busy than it used to be, but there are a lot more dining options now available in the area.

After dinner, I headed over to visit my friend Matt who I haven’t seen since before the pandemic. It was really nice to see him and reconnect after all these years. Honestly, it feels like all of us were just in high school yesterday. That feeling is definitely at odds with the fact all three of my boys have left the nest. It was the great day and a great night. The only thing missing was my adorable puppies and their excited wiggles when they see me.

Speaking of my empty nest, all three boys are doing well. The Mayor reached out looking for some protein powder and bio freeze. Apparently, they must be working him pretty hard in Ft Myers’s. Goalielocks started classes and volleyball practice this week, which are both going well. Jake and I are working on the logistics of our Mighty Five Adventure.

What motivates you?

My boys have always been a big source of motivation. I can hardly ask them to work towards becoming the best version of themselves if I’m not setting example. Speaking of motivated, I’m on a three day streak of running outside. Unfortunately, I’ll have to go back to running on the treadmill once back home due to the heat. I am, however, really enjoying running on the track.

Back Home

We made it back home from Boston last night. Fortunately, the trip was completely uneventful and smooth sailing. The extent of our travel troubles was me missing my turn at the rental return center and the Mayor’s meltdown over food in the Sky Club. In his opinion, the food there sucks. In fact, it didn’t but he was happy to eat his Sbarro. Meanwhile, I enjoyed the locally curated food including one last bowl of clam chowder and a cannoli.

I ordered pizza on the way home as there was no way my ass was cooking dinner last night. It would have been nice to have a home-cooked meal after eating out the last five days, but whatever. Nonetheless, I was happy to be home and reunited with the puppies. Unfortunately, my sweet Athena is not looking too good. I keep hoping against hope that she’ll miraculously recover. I really can’t imagine our house without her.

The change in climate from Boston to South Florida was brutal. Our weather throughout the trip was quite comfortable. There was one evening of storms, but those hit after we had made it back to the hotel for the night. In contrast, South Florida continues to be unseasonably hot and humid. I noticed when we got home that our house was pretty hot. Apparently, the AC was not working so well. I’m not sure when it stopped working, but nobody seemed to notice until I said something. Fortunately, the hubby was able to get it working, so we could sleep comfortably.

It’s good to be home, but the trip to Boston was great. I’d be happy to never have to drive in that city again, but I did enjoy exploring it on foot. It was a great trip to connect with the Mayor’s new team and to connect with my dear friend Jenny. I can’t believe that we ended up in the same city on the same weekend. It was such a blessing to be able to see her for dinner. Now that we’re back home, it’s back to reality which includes work and eating healthy again. The splurge on tasty food in Boston was fun, but I’m ready to get back on the wagon.

First Weekend Off

It was our first weekend off since hockey ended. I thought my liver would recover nicely now that hockey season was over. As it happens, this proved to be an entirely false hypothesis. It all started Saturday afternoon in our driveway with the neighbors. The boys were watching glue dry (literally) and the wives joined them to enjoy some drinks. Before you knew it, we ended up heading to a restaurant with the guys in hard hats and high-visibility vests.

Sunday we headed to brunch with my friend Scott. He and I worked together at Progressive many moons ago. In fact, he first met me when I was pregnant with Zachary. We met at JB’s on the beach in Deerfield Beach. It’s an awesome place, but the whole rigmarole of traffic was too much. Deerfield Beach is one of those places you need to get to extremely early if you don’t like traffic. Nevertheless, the view, the food, and the company made suffering through traffic worth it. Our first weekend off of hockey was a smashing good time.

I crashed, however, as soon as we got home thanks to the mimosas. Fortunately, I woke up in time to see Kaprizov score a hat-trick and steal the game from Columbus. The kid is incredible. Speaking of hockey, we didn’t fully take the weekend off from hockey. The Mayor started lessons with Coach Joni early Saturday morning. Joni is an incredible skating coach, so I’m excited to see the process the Mayor makes under his tutelage. They’ll be working together weekly. Tonight the Mayor will play in the high school All-Star game, which should be fun.
