Missing My Airmen

Today is one of those days I’m really missing my airmen. Albeit, today was a good day. It’s just one of those day’s that I would have loved being able to see his face and give him a hug. Being a military mom is hard sometimes, especially when you don’t know when you’ll see your airmen next. Fortunately, I am blessed with the knowledge that my airmen is happy and thriving in his new role.

I actually got an early start to the day since I didn’t snooze my alarm. Consequently, there were no lakes in any of the puppies’ crates. Early on in the day it was evident that leg day was super effective. Naturally, my Tuesday runs tend to be more difficult as my muscles are sore from the previous day’s workout. Nonetheless, I powered through and logged another 2.7 miles on the treadmill. Of course, I was enjoying the musical stylings of Metallica while taking in the comedic antics of Larry David.

Afterward, I headed to the studio for my favorite yoga class of the week. In fact, it was even better this week as my friend Pam was back in class. Yay!!!! My legs and hips were quite fatigued from the run and the work yesterday, but the yoga did a body good. Right before class started my girlfriend Pam, who hasn’t seen me since the Covid19 shut down, told me how fit looked. Clearly, there can be no doubt: the BBG plan, running and yoga classes are working!

I spent my afternoon in the company of one of my favorite people – Terri. Initially, we were going to go to Starbucks, but since there is not eating available we decided against it. Consequently, we ended up sharing an appetizer of vegetables with hummus and tzatziki at the Greek restaurant next door. First of all, it was nice to be eating in a restaurant (even if we were the only ones there.). Secondly, the food was very tasty and healthy! Lastly and most importantly, the time was spent in great company. Truly, it was a wonderful afternoon.

We both have the honor and distinction of being military moms. Terri’s son has been in for several years now, so she’s a pro. Consequently, she and her hubby have been great resources for the hubby and I as we embark on this new chapter of our lives. Moreover, she understands what it’s like to not be able to see your child for extended periods of time or worry about where they’ll be stationed. At the end of the day, however, what’s most important is the pride we both have for our children that serve. Nonetheless, I would love to see my airmen soon!

Meanwhile at the homestead, the Mayor continues to get non-stop, round the clock FaceTime calls. Since we share an Apple ID, our phones don’t stop running. It’s driving my nuts. As for Goalielocks, he’s been hanging out with his school friends tonight. Since the virus shut things down, this is only the second time he’s been able to see his friends. Additionally, instead of hanging out at someone’s house, they’ve been meeting at the courts and pool instead. This way they’re outside and not in close quarters.

Here Comes the Sun

Here comes the sun, doo-dun-doo-doo. You sang that first line, didn’t you? I knew it because I totally did. As the title suggests, we finally saw the sun today!!! Yay! Can we get a hurrah for the natural provider of vitamin D? It seems like a year since we last saw the son in 2020. Mostly because each week of 2020 seems to be taking a year. Anyway, the sun has me in a Beatles inspired mood.

Speaking of which, my morning got off to a late start. I was going to wake up early to go for a walk, but my stomach was not feeling it. Clearly, I can’t afford to be non-compliant with a gluten free diet. Unfortunately, it means I really can’t eat it at all. Needless to say, I ended up sleeping later that anticipated, which means the dogs got taken out later than normal. Consequently, poor Anakin had a lake in his crate when I woke up.

I got him out of ASAP and wiped off his feet and body with a towel. Afterwards, I took him out for a walk. Naturally, he needed a bath, which the Mayor gave him after his walk. Together we cleaned up the mess while also taking care of our other two fur babies. All three of the puppies were in great moods this morning. They love to play all together. Honestly, there is not greater gift than a dog. They love unconditionally and are always happy to see you.

Despite the rocky start to the morning, I found my zen on my mat with Monica at 10. My muscles were tired today. Not sure if it was from the hard work I did in Monica’s vinyasa class Sunday or just old age. Nonetheless, it was a good class. My legs and hips definitely needed the gentle flow today as they were quite tight this morning. The gentle flow has been a great addition to my yoga practice.

Afterwards, I took a brief snack break before launching into my BBG leg workout. Significantly, these workouts have gotten a lot easier for me. Obviously, it means I’m making some great progress. Moreover, I see a lot progress in my yoga practice due to BBG. The BBG workouts have really made me strong as I’ve become more flexible. Consequently, I have a lot more mobility now than ever before. For example, in wheel I used to have discomfort in my lower back, now I only feel a great stretch on my belly.

This afternoon, I had my yoga teacher training focusing on anatomy. Fortunately, I have a pretty good understanding on anatomy courtesy of my house full of athletes (myself included.). Afterwards, I started cooking dinner, which was shiitake hoisin burgers courtesy of Blue Apron. It was very yummy. When the fridge shutoff in the middle of the night yesterday, I grieved all the meal kits that had been spoiled. Until I realized I had most of ingredients that were spoiled in the kits in my fridge. The only thing I had to buy was the meat. We also grilled some steaks since I accidentally got the meal kit for two this week. Whoops!

Mind Over Matter

Mind over matter, my friend Lisa and I chanted this over and over as we tried to master paddle board yoga in Turks and Caicos. While we couldn’t paddle board to save our lives, we were able to do a sun salutation on the board. Apparently, it is hard to be a successful paddle boarder while using a kayak paddle. Nonetheless, we made the most of our time with the paddle board.

Today I was in Monica’s vinyasa class (at my house via Zoom) and this memory came flooding back to me. Fortunately, this mantra has served me well in life and in my yoga practice. For years, I struggled with crow, headstand and handstand, but the mind over matter mantra has helped drive my practice forward. Unfortunately, it hasn’t helped me opened my side body enough to be able to do side crow again. However, I was able to declare victory with my crow pose today!

Aside from yoga, Sunday’s are my off day from exercise. My legs and hips were tight from yesterday’s run, so today’s class was definitely needed. Afterwards, I worked around the house and watched more nature specials with Anakin. Additionally, we firmed up our vacation plans for the Keys. Normally, we would have gone to the Bahamas, but that’s not going to happen in the age of COVID. Although I will miss the beaches and luscious tropical foliage of Atlantis.

Prior to going to virtual yoga, I watched Jake’s chapel service. I love watching him play. In fact, it was nice to watch today as it was the first time they’ve had people in the chapel since March. Of course, he played well and he looked great. Unfortunately, he’s been without data, WiFi or internet all day due to the tropical storm. He sent a picture and you can really see the winds, but I can’t post the live view on the blog so you’ll have to use your imagination.

Of course, the era of social distancing, covid and hate has been fun enough with out the other “H word,” but here we are less than a week into hurricane season and on our C storm. We escaped the worse of the weather this weekend, but the rest of the peninsula wasn’t as lucky. Indeed, I saw several crazy tornado videos from the Orlando area. Jake’s currently experiencing the worst of it, which is a lot of rain and some wind. Thankfully, he’s safe where he’s at. Obviously, it’s tough for all the internet and data to be down, but it could me a lot worse.

As for the hate, I choose love. I was fortunate to have parents that raised me to see every human life as valuable. Race, religion, ethnicity, etc. wasn’t important in the sense that it never equates with someone’s value as a person. Apparently, the memo has missed too many people. It’s a simple issue that we have made far too complex. Everyone is equal, yet not everyone has an equal experience in life. This isn’t to say that everyone’s life should be perfect only that it shouldn’t be handicapped by race, ethnicity, religion or gender.

After I shared some goodwill on Facebook, the hubby and I partnered up to make an awesome meal courtesy of HelloFresh. Incidentally, we had to make some ingredient substitutions as one of our garage fridges went off last night. Nonetheless, this meal of Bulgogi meatballs with rice and roasted carrots was easy to make and absolutely delicious. Everyone enjoyed this one!

The Tropics

The tropics have fired up early this year! Tropical Storm Cristobal is churning away in the Gulf of Mexico bringing much of the Florida peninsula rain today. Markedly, today is the first day in a minute that we haven’t received significant rain. Nonetheless, it’s still overcast and cloudy and we didn’t see the sunrise and won’t see the sunset either.

Unfortunately, the path a head for the storm brings it to our airmen’s doorsteps. Fortunately, it appears to be mainly a rainmaker at this point. Also, they’re forecasting it to remain a tropical storm at landfall. This is obviously a good thing, but it along with the path could change at any point. Fortunately, his base has been through these things before and is well prepared for whatever Cristobal will bring.

Since the weather’s still questionable and we’re still staying home as much as possible, I made today productive. Or at least as productive as I could. Fortunately, I got a lot done around the house. I started cleaning our bathroom, but fill finish it tomorrow. However, I was was as able to get the laundry completed. Naturally, I spend a lot of time straightening up the family and room and living rooms because that’s where the dogs spend most of their time.

Unbeknownst to me, Anakin stuck outside behind me when I went outside to shake out the broom. You can. Imagine my surprise when coming out of the bathroom two minutes later, I couldn’t find him anywhere. And then I heard him barking. The poor guy snuck outside and was at the front door waiting for me to open it. Thankfully, he’s a well trained puppy and didn’t run off. Obviously, we were both relieved when he made his way back inside. Nonetheless, I’m sure there are plenty of untold stories from his outdoor adventure today.

Before all of that nonsense, I got in my fourth run of the week. I decided to do a hybrid steady state and HIIT. After warming up, I ran five minutes at a steady state before walking. Once I started walking, I started the interval work. For this I alternated every 30 seconds between 7.0-8.0 mph sprints and walks at 3 mph. Clearly, this type of run brings its own challenges, but I find it goes quicker. This is likely due to changing the tempo so frequent. Afterwards, I completed my post run stretch routine, which felt great and continues to keep my legs healthy.

For dinner, I made the hubby and I cumin spiced pork roast served with vegetable fried rice courtesy of Blue Apron. Since I accidentally selected the 2 serving option, I ordered Pizza Hut for the boys. The Mayor was pleased that after having asked everyday for the last week, I finally acquiesced to his request. Fortunately, both their pizza and our pork with fried rice were great. Since we were doing carry out at Pizza Hut, we ate dinner a little bit earlier than normal as the hubby picked it up on his way home.

Today’s featured picture comes courtesy of my mother’s garden in Minnesota. The pink and white flowers are peonies. My great grandmother passed these beautiful plants down to my mother. I always loved going to my great grandmother’s house and seeing the peonies that lined her driveway in bloom. Indeed getting out of the car was a treat as the sweet aroma of the peonies hit your senses. My great grandmother also passed down the purple flower, an iris, to my mom. Unfortunately, I cannot grow either of these flowers in South Florida.

Holy Humidity Batman!

Holy humidity Batman!! Here we are the fifth of June with a dew point in the 80s. Oh the joys of having a tropical system in the Gulf. For the uninitiated, dew points in the 80s make the state feel like a sauna. Unfortunately, in our case there’s no cold, refreshing water to dive into to help cool us down. Naturally, we experience these dew points every year, but it is a bit unusual to have it so humid this early in the game.

This was from 9:00 am this morning!

As you can see by the “real feel” temperature, it felt like 95 degrees this morning. Naturally, this is a big reason I’ve taken my run indoors. These temperatures with this humidity, even with the cloud cover, can be dangerous if you’re not properly hydrated. Additionally, since I run outside with my puppy, I must take into consideration what is best for her health. She loves to run, but in this heat it’s too much. Plus, the path heats up and can even burn her paws.

My Sweet Athena!

So after yesterday’s scheduling debacle, I made sure to design my day so I wouldn’t miss yoga again. I was so bummed when my memory, fallen by thyroid brain I’m sure, conveniently reminded me at 11:30 that 11:30 was actually the new class time. Nonetheless, today I was victorious. I got my BBG workout in and made it to yoga in time! Today’s BBG workout was abs plus skipping rope. As always, I sucked at jumping rope. Jenn’s class was amazing. She taught a great, creative flow that was just what my body needed.

This evening we went to our friends’ house for dinner. It’s the first time I’ve seen sweet Ava in months. She’s grown so big! Truly, it was great to spend some time with people socially outside of our house! Plus, my friend Hanh is an amazing cook. Fortunately, we were also working on our vacation plans. Ordinarily, we’d all go to the Bahamas over spring break, but COVID shut that down this year. Since Atlantis is still closed, we’ll be heading to the Keys for some rest and relaxation. It should be a wonderful time.

Ava taking a selfie!

Lastly, I don’t know about you, but Facebook has become a complete dumpster fire. There is so much hate and division that it mutes the protests. Hate begets hate. Division begets division yet here we are… This blog isn’t political never has been and never will, but as a country we have to do better. Everyone should have the same opportunities and rule set. Nonetheless, people have different opinions, which on Facebook apparently warrants a delete and block. If you’re operating in absolutes or false dilemma logical fallacies and deleting people, your part of the problem.

Yet Another Rainy Day

Today we had yet another rainy day here in Florida. Literally, it has rained almost non-stop since Tuesday, which was like a week ago. Unlike yesterday’s storms, today brought quite a bit of rain, but not as much thunder and lightning as yesterday. I hate driving in Florida in the rain, but I was totally excited to of to yoga today.

Unfortunately, I forgot to plan my morning for yoga starting at 11:30 am instead of 12:00 pm. Naturally, I didn’t come to this realization until 11:28 as I wrapped up my run on the treadmill. Doh!!! Honestly, I can’t believe I jacked that up. When I woke up this morning, I planned to move my run up a half hour to accommodate the new start time for yoga. Well, I guess you can say I had planned to do it until I totally spaced on it.

How could I space on the time change? Unfortunately, my morning was a bit crazy thanks to the puppies. We have finally gotten to a time in our life as dog parents, where indoor accidents are minimal. At least, until this morning. All of the dogs, perhaps there was something in the water, were on their worst bathroom behavior today.

Maya, our oldest, had diarrhea all over outside. Thankfully, it was outside. Then while sitting on the couch, she proceeded to start peeing all over herself. Fortunately, Maya likes to walk and pee at the same time, so she got it everywhere. Meanwhile, Athena decided to do her business inside. Fortunately, she ate some of it before we could get to it, so there was less to pick up. Anakin, however, despite his best efforts missed the puppy pad ever so slightly. Oh the joys of my morning.

For a time, Anakin was the only dog not in his crate. This drove him absolutely bonkers. Consequently, he would bark at his sisters and rub against their cage to open them up. (Yes, he knows how to open both of their cages.) Our sweet puppy absolutely worships his sisters. Athena loves him, but gets widely jealous when he plays with Maya. Meanwhile Maya likes to feign indifference, but he has really drawn the puppy out of her. Comparatively, Anakin is not the least bit shy about his love for his sisters.

Tonight I had my PANCAN monthly affiliate call, which is always great. Today was wonderful because we had some new people join the call. I’m so excited to see the affiliate growing. While I was on the call, my Hubby cooled us Pork Carnitas tacos courtesy of Hello Fresh. Needless to say, I would have taken a picture if I hadn’t gotten inhaled it so quickly. It was so yummy! Lastly, I have to share this fabulous photo of Mel to celebrate her graduation.

Wet Wednesday

Well it was a wet Wednesday here in Florida. I should probably say it is a wet Wednesday since it’s still raining and it’s still Wednesday. Nevertheless, I spent most of my day inside being productive! Yes, this weather was perfect for ticking off items on my miles long to do list. Hopefully, in the next day or two I’ll be able to reveal some of what I’ve been working on.

The great thing about the BBG program and having a treadmill that the poor weather provides no excuse for skipping a workout. Incidentally, today was arm and HIIT treadmill run day. Needless to say, I completed over 100 push-ups over the course of the workout. Interestingly enough since I’ve gotten strong I got through the first circuit three times both rounds! In fact, it felt like it went quick. Go me! As for the run, I love the 30/30 walk/sprint split. Today I maxed my speed out at 8.0 mph.

In addition to the rain, it was quite breezy with the storms. Consequently, it was near impossible to get the dogs out for a decent walk today. So before I got started on my workouts, Anakin and I took in a nature documentary. This time we watched one on the wildlife of Zambia. He’s not super interested in watching fish or marine mammals, but large land mammals keep him transfixed. Truly, it was obvious that there is an incredible array of wildlife to see throughout the country.

Today marks Mel’s official graduation from high school. The family and I watched via the district’s YouTube page. Clearly, graduation has a much different feel this year. I feel bad for the seniors, who missed out on so many milestones this spring. Hopefully, the world will calm down a bit, so the kids can go off school in the fall. Obviously, I’m hoping that they allow kids back on the high school campuses next fall!

Congrats are in Order

Congrats are in order for my airmen, who completed his technical training today. We’re so excited for all that he has accomplished since joining the service last year. Of course, it was a wonderful surprise to get a FaceTime call from him in the middle of the day. Seeing his smiling face with his graduation certificate was an absolute treat!

Since it was Tuesday, I logged a solid 2.7 miles on the treadmill while watching Larry David and the early Curb episodes. I usually do a mixed tempo run on Tuesday. However, today I decided to do the first half at one speed. The second half I did at three different speeds by altering the tempo very sixty seconds. By the end of the run, I was completely gassed! Fortunately, tomorrow I have my tempo run, which is a feast way to mix things up.

Afterwards I went to yoga at the studio. It’s the first time I’ve been to class since the studio closed due to COVID. There were only two of us, but it felt great to be back in the studio environment. Monica did a nice, balanced flow that my body just loved. In fact, I’m pretty sure I was on cloud nine after our time in sleeping pigeon. Oh that felt so good!!!! Sadly now that I’m back in the studio you won’t be subjected to me and my yoga poses. After class, Monica came over and we gave her two mango and banana saplings.

We had thought about taking Goalielocks to hockey tonight, but the city where the rink is located is under curfew. Since we live far from the rink, we decided to keep him home out of respect to the curfew. Plus, it would be the Hubby’s luck to get picked up for it. Needless to say, it just seemed like a smart decision to stay home tonight. Plus, it’s raining. Who wants to go anywhere when it’s raining?

Before I forget this morning, the Mayor and I were watching a nature show in the Smithsonian Channel. It was about the Sea of Okhtosk in north eastern Russia. First of all, this place looks absolutely amazing. However, it seems a bit scary between the bears, the Siberian tigers and volcanos. Nevertheless, the bears captivated Anakin. He alternated between barking at them and just taking in the scenery. Clearly, it was quite adorable.

This evening we’re just chilling at the homestead. I made an Italian Steaks and Panzanella from Blue Apron. It was okay, but the steak wasn’t super tender. My boys didn’t like the panzanella because it had pesto on it. Needless to say, I don’t understand how anyone could not like a bread salad. As for the post dinner chill, we’re enjoying some vintage episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Missed a Day

So I missed a day! In my quest to write everyday since the pandemic began, I’ve only missed two days. Unsurprisingly, there is a commonality involved in both of these days. I’ll give you a hint, if tastes good and includes tequila. Yep, you guess it it was another epic night of margaritas and Prosecco. On the scale of margarita nights, it was a one paragraph night. Meaning I could only read one paragraph in my book before falling asleep.

Nonetheless, the margaritas were the perfect happy ending to a productive weekend. Before I got to Sunday night, I competed my Chair Yoga Certification with Eva at Open Heart Yoga Studio. Let me tell you, I wish I had chair yoga available to me when I tore my tendon. I could have kept up my practice without injuring my ankle further. Moreover, as the chair yoga class I took showed, the calorie burn was equivalent to a mat yoga class.

It was truly an eye opening experience. What I love about chair yoga is it makes yoga accessible. Importantly, I’m pursuing my yoga teacher training because I want to help people help themselves. A regular yoga practice has been cathartic band healing for me. Additionally, the training provided me with the opportunity to practice teaching. However, the best part of training was the teacher and fellow students. I learned so much from everyone. Eva teaches an amazing yoga class and is the perfect teacher. I loved every minute of it.

Pursuing yoga teacher training coincides perfectly with my desire to pursue a life where peace and happiness are the only choice. Clearly this doesn’t mean that everything will be perfect, but the things that no longer served me will be gone. Too often the only lens we see in this world is the one that gives the bleakest picture. All weekend we were inundated with pictures of rioters and looters. Meanwhile there were beautiful and meaningful protests going on across the country and in conjunction with local law enforcement. Even in the craziness, there was love to be found.

The last several months have been incredibly difficult for everyone: especially virtual school. So naturally I had to celebrate the end of the school year. The margaritas PJ was making were so good that we had a bit of a goose that laid the golden egg situation. We went through all the mixers and alcohol. Fortunately, I came prepared with a chilled bottle of Prosecco. Once the margarita well ran dry, the Prosecco rose merrily to the challenge.

We had such a great time with Mel and her folks last night. Since she officially graduates on Wednesday, we brought over her graduation gifts and card. Fortunately, we got a gift ourselves when Jake called via FaceTime. It was a lot of fun for him to talk to all of us. After awhile, we decided to give my parents a call, so we all spoke on FaceTime. It was great to see Jake looking so great and happy to be talking to everyone. Additionally, it was a great distraction for my parents after all the riots in Minnesota this past week.
